Help - sky multiroom needs a phone line

    Hi folks

I've ordered sky and took the multi room option as the half price offer was a good one. The sales guy asked if I had a phone line, I explained I had but it was one of the UPC phones over my broadband line. He said this was fine and the impression he gave me was that it was only used during teh installation.

the problem I have is that this UPC phone is in my study room whereas the tv is in the sitting room with a kitchen between them. It isnt really an option to run a cable between the two, it would actually be easier to move the modem in there. This isnt' really appealing either though, I'm tempted just to cancel and reorder, paying the one off 'dont have a phoneline' fee. of course then I cont have the multi room but I can live without it.

can anyone confirm for me that sky will indeed work with these Chorus modems? The one I have seems to be a Scientifica Atlanta modem. It has a free RJ45 socket at the back but a standard phone doesnt seem to work on it (maybe my old spare phopne is at fault though)

    any advice or sugestions?

    thanks

all it needs is a dial tone as all it wants to do is dial out.
I don't see what the problem could be.

    Hi jackrussel.
I'm in the same boat as you so am interested to see how you got on in the end?
I ordered Sky+ and Multiroom and two "technicians" came out and tried to do the callback through our UPC phoneline. It didn't work and they were making lots of phonecalls to try and figure it out but then left, leaving me with no Sky+ or Multiroom. I have since heard that you CAN get multiroom with the UPC phoneline and SKY are sending out some more technicians to try again. I'm not letting them leave this time!!!

It needs a lot more than just a dial tone. It has to connect, do a modem handshake (the problematic bit), and transfer some data about you box/viewing card.

I know in the case of Digiweb Metro it works, but the line lengths from the Sky box to the modem had to be short (and using Cat5 didn't help much). So it might be a distance thing, if other UPC users are reporting it working. I've no experience with the UPC modems, though.

UPC Is a voip line as far as I know and so will no longer work for sky boxes, there should be a method of using them, have you tried to contact Upc regarding this...as afterall its technically there problem that you cant make an outgoing call...
