My tire/wheel has a....flat bit....

Don't have a picture to supply atm but I've noticed my ride was bumpy when on a very smooth part of road and on examination my rear tire has an indentation/flat bit/is not round :) Imagine if you would that it was a car and had been left standing for months.

Now the tire is sound and properly circular :P the wheel/rim is true and the tube is fine but essentially it's like that section of the tire hasn't inflated outwards completely even deflating and reinflating hasn't solved it. It starts a little past where the valve is.

The only thing I can think of is that the tube is new but it's the right size and I've never had the problem before. Anyone else had this? I'm going to purchase a new tube but just wanted to know if there could be any other reason so I can buy the parts at the same time.

Did you try taking everything off the wheel and installing again?

Yeah. I actually had the pleasure of two punctures yesterday so stripped and refitted twice. One from glass and then on the return home with the tire not at correct pressure cos of the handpump I whacked a pothole and got a pinch flat. Oh how I chuckled.....

Anyway, just wondering if it was something obvious to regular cyclists. I can only blame the new tube as it was a different make from what I normally use but don't understand why when it's the correct fit.

Long shot, but has the tube twisted inside the tyre?

Not that I'm aware of and it has been reinstalled twice. I've never had it happen before. Now that I stop to think one thing I've noticed is that unlike any other tube I've used it doesn't have to be 'bent' into the tire. You know, like it's slightly too big. This one is a perfect fit and the valve was extra long.

Tbh, I'm probably wasting your time. It's gotta just be a weird tube. I'll go buy some from crc now and see what's the story when I switch em over. I'll just have to bear with the vibration for the time being.

I put a tube in about a month ago (a brand I hadn't used before) and something similar happened.

How deep is your rim? ;) It seemed as the tube had inflated but part was stuck in the rim rather than moving up and filling the tyre, just in one place. Got to about 60psi when I noticed. Strange alright, parts of the tyre are rock solid and then a section about 3-5cm long was flat, (I could feel the solid tube once I pushed the tyre in, if ya get me)

After 2 or 3 attempts I gave up and got a different brand tube, which worked no problem first time.

EDIT: and just to add in response to the post above, yeah the tube fit very snug between the tyre and rim, a little bit too snug

It's a strange one. Does sound like some problem with the tube. Usually near the valve stem you get the opposite problem, the tyre bulging out because the tube isn't sitting right. I'm curious though what would cause it to not to fully fill out this region.

have a really good look at the tyre (take it off the rim etc). what you have could be the first sign of it de-laminating, which would eventually lead to a blow out. scary when it happens - especially if it's the front - and usually not repairable on the side of the road which means a walk home or a rescue call.

Quick solution. by process of elimination replace tube and reinflate then if still have same problem replace tyre etc. At least you will know what is causing the problem ( assuming you have a spare tyre;))

CHeers for replies. Hopefully new tubes will sort it. I'll find out tomorrow I suppose. I'm bloody sick of taking that tire off at this stage :D

just spin your wheel on the bike and looking in relation to your brake pads(im assuming you dont have discs) see if the rims(not the tyre) profile changes, it could be a hop in the wheel rim or indeed a flat spot.

But the most common would be they tyre seating arseways on the rim:)

make sure your axle isnt loose or smashed either.

Next time you take out the suspect tube inflate it to see if it expands equally. There might be an inconsistancy in the thickness or quality of the tube at that point.

If you patch your tubes, perhaps the patch is preventing the tube from expanding to it's full diameter at that point?

    (just a guess)
