External TV Tuner Query

    Hi all,

I am interested in purchasing a new HDTV and I was informed by an Irish retailer that any TV's purchased in the UK will not work in Ireland without the use of an external tuner?!
Can anyone enlighten me on this, I'm sure that many TV's have crossed our borders over the last couple of months! Is it scare mongering as I suspect?
Does it only affect Terrestrial reception or not?

Apologies if this is answered elsewhere.

    Thanks Guys,

    CS

What he is referring to is probably two things

    1. Most UK new TVs dont come with an analog VHF tuner which means that some analog UPC and RTE transmissions wont work (not all as some parts of the country use only UHF for analog transmissions now).

    2. Most UK new TVs dont come with an MPEG4 H.264 capable digital terrestrial tuner which means Irish DTT wont work. Check the stickies for TV's that are compatible

If you plan on using Sky Digital or UPC Digital that all this doesnt really matter as you will be using an external tuner.

VHF is probably not as much of a concern as MPEG4 as over the medium term all digital TV transmissions will be on UHF

Does anyone know here you can buy an external VHF tuner. I know you can use and old Vide Recorder but don't have one of those
