Emmisions light on in mk4 golf

Have been driving a 03 mk4 diesel golf now for a while, lovely car and running well. However, was out for a short spin last night and the Workshop Emmisions warning light came on. It is still on this morning. I put 20 euros worth of diesel into her yesterday evening on the way home from work. Could it be related to dirty diesel? I was thinking I would fill the tank at a different station in a day or two and see what happens then. If it does not go out I will get it checked out.

Could be the brake light switch too, same ECU warning light for this fault, see if they are working. Only real way to know is to connect it to a diagnostics machine. Usually this fault is the oxygen sensor or the brake light switch, both not majorly costly to fix.

Thanks for your response. I will check the brake lights this evening. Are you sure its the same warning light for both? Can anyone confirm this? If the warning light does not go out I will get it checked at a garage

The emmisions light went off last night after 24 hours of it coming on so hopefully its nothing serious. BTW how often should the oil be changed in this car? 10,000 miles is it?

The emmisions light was on full time last week so I got it checked out over the weekend. The problem was a faulty temperature sensor
