This seems to be almost half the price of any other site I can find

The Ext is for external ,meaning it can be used outside the pc.
    It plays blu-ray discs/movies ,so it's a player.

I can see what I wrote might give the wrong impression ,I edited the title.

You can get internal ones for close to the same price, not sure why anyone would want an external BR drive....

It's handy for moving around ,I've got a blu-ray movie collection and the ps3 is the only player I have.
I need an external drive for ripping cd's up on my desk ,this is only a few quid more and it means I can watch blu-rays if I want.
I've also a media centre pc ,which I've hidden at the back of the tv. This drive would be handy sitting around the front.

Well, you should check your specs before ye buy it, cos they take pretty high specs, esp CPU and Graphics wise to play back Blueray on your PC

you can download a checker I think

and the latest PowerDVD should play them

Well, you wouldn't be ripping many cds or dvds with it, seeing as it isn't a burner. Notice how there are no specs for burning speeds?

You can still rip from a CD-ROM / DVD-ROM / BD-ROM, just not burn with it.

And now I feel stupid :) had a slight brain freeze there!

But you won't be ripping any *blu-rays* unless you pony up for AnyDVD HD.

For people who dont know how to install an internal one.
    For people with laptops
For people with no empty bays to install one.

    Lots of reasons
