Toyota Corolla - braking by itself

My friend has a 2000 Corolla and has felt the car 'brake' by itself while driving. It only last for a second and the ABS light comes on during it. She has taken the car to a mechaninc who replaced the shoes but she has experienced the phenomonon twice since then. Anyone hear of anything like this before or what the cause might be?

Some 00 reg corolla's, the twin headlamps type with seperate dip and full beam lights, had a recall for ECU replacement. Might be an idea to call toyota, quote them the chasis number and ask if it's under recall.

Are you sure it's actually braking? That sounds very unlikely.
It could just be a temporary loss of power that might 'feel' like the brakes are being applied and would possibly suggest a HT or ECU problem.
A temporary loss of power to the ecu might cause it to reboot and display the ABS light and would also explain an engine power loss.

    Steve,
That's exactly the symptoms I had before I had my cars ECU repaired as a result of a recall.

Hi OP, I have read on CBG.ie that some '00 Corolla's do this and it is down to an air intake issue. May be worth a look....

Thanks for all the replies guys. My friend says the car is definitely braking (enough to scare the crap out of her anyway). I'll let her know ye're suggestions and hopefully she can get it sorted.

Do any other warning lights come on?

Edit: Scratch that. Just tell her to get to to a mechanic before it causes an accident.

I've A 1999 Corolla With The Opposite Problem. Mine Revs Up To 2,000rpm, I've Changed The Throttle Body 3 Times So I've Kinda Ruled It Out, So I'm Thinking It Could Be The Ecu. Anyone Else Experienced This Problem?

No, but I have seen a problem where a poster had Caps Lock on, and their post ended up looking like yours! :D
Why did you change the throttle body three times?
