Six month work experience - IT/Programming/Linux

Hi. This may be a complete shot in the dark but here it goes.

I'm looking for a six-month work placement in programming and/or Unix systems administration as part of my course; I'm currently in my third year of BSc. in Computer Applications (Software Engineering) in DCU. The university's work placement programme is known as INTRA (INtegrated TRAining).

The dates for employment are April 6th to September 18th 2009. I live in Blanchardstown and am suited to working in anywhere in Dublin north/northwest/city centre or around Leixlip and Maynooth. Out of this placement I am hoping to emerge with strong programming, administration and scripting skills and a good idea of what working in the industry is like.

My strongest programming languages are C++, C and Java. I also have experience with SQL, HTML, x86 and MIPS64 assembly languages and multithreading.

I have been using DOS and then Windows for almost two decades. I admittedly love Linux and am approaching four years of experience. I have a very good understanding of how the Linux kernel and operating system as a whole work as well as differences between various distributions. This includes some experience with bash scripting.

I am knowledgeable about hardware and CPU architectures in both desktop and server environments as well as networking (ethernet, wifi, subnetting) and security (rootkits, viruses, encryption, exploits).

Previous work experience includes Eircom as an ADSL technical support agent and Fujitsu-Siemens for short periods.

I am a rigidly logical and technical person who can quickly see errors in ideas and suggest improvements.
I can take on an interesting task and keeping working at it until it is completed.
    I am punctual.

Native English speaker with a typing speed of ~100wpm, good grasp of Irish.

Previous helpdesk of DCU Networking Society (RedBrick).
Current treasurer of DCU Games Society (Gamessoc).

I realise I have given a lot of information here but if anyone has any advice or is interested in speaking to me about a job, I welcome all replies and PMs! I am perfectly happy to accept a job which only includes one or so of my areas of interest.

Do you want to get paid or will you work for free?

I would require no less than minimum wage. As far as I am aware most INTRA-organised jobs will pay at least this.

Have you applied to Google? Admittedly they seem to prefer DIT students for some reason but worth a shot.

    1. Microsoft
    2. Google
    3. Oracle
    4. IBM
    5. AIB(not sure if they are taking students this yr)
    6. Beumont(Free though)
    7. Pocket Kings-they use c# though, if you are interested in them let me know. AFAIK they want to introduce an internship for students. Not sure if that has kicked off. But i am friends with the Talent manager there and i would ask if you are interested.

These are the few companies at the top of my head which i can say have work placements.

Few things to note, you want a programming job doesn't mean you would get one! Be open minded, your college supervisor/director should tell you more on this.

Other options would be to do the Cisco course, as it is IT companies are now suffering from the recession and would rather take professionals with experience than students.

    goodluck!

That would be great re Pocket Kings. C# should be fairly simple to transition over to. Cheers, I appreciate it.

I applied to IBM shortly after creating this thread and I believe Oracle and Google's INTRA positions have already been filled. AIB usually go through DCU but I didn't see them on the list this year so it may be safe to assume that they are not taking on students.
