N8 Glanmire/Watergrasshill motorway redesignations

For those who don't know, last October the National Roads Authority (NRA) applied to the Department of Transport to redesignate the N8 dual carriageway from Dunkettle to the Fermoy Bypass startpoint to motorway (see here: http://www.transport.ie/upload/general/10978-9.pdf). The redesignation order was to go through in January, then February, and now sometime in March. Obviously the DoT is procrastinating; perhaps the finances aren't there to replace the green signage with blue.

In my opinion the entire stretch would also need to be relined and re-studded. The Watergrasshill bypass section is particularly dark at night time. In addition, if the redesignation goes ahead, emergency telephones will be installed along the stretch and obviously L drivers and slow-moving vehicles will be banned from the road.

In any case, Corkonians can look forward to motorway/dual carriageway all the way up to Cullahill by the end of May this year.

Good news for the trip home - pity there's not a single service station along the way!
And it's a fecking boring drive now...
Saying that, it only takes slightly over 2 hrs from M50 to Cork :)

    Looking forward to that!

Thanks Furet for all the updates/pics in the other thread.

If and when the redesignations go through, and when the motorway between Fermoy and Mitchelstown opens, yes. The 17.5km Fermoy Bypass and the M7/M8 PPP scheme under construction in Co Laois will be the only two sections on the route that will be tolled.

    See: http://www.nra.ie/RoadSchemeActivity/LaoisCountyCouncil/N8PortlaoisetoCullahillCastletown/Map,15444,en.pdf

In all, 40km. But only 13km of this forty is M8. The rest is M7.

It has its own thread here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055344405

The road is good most of the way now. You only go through Abbeyleix now and some other place that is smaller than horse and jockey. U'd only notice it as u your suppose to slow down goign through it. I got all the way from dublin to cork city in 2hr 30mins. When they finish it all off u should get to dublin in like 2hrs maybe even a small bit less.

Fantastic.. in that case, can we start a petition to get all roads re-designated as motorways?

The 16-km Mitchelstown-Fermoy section will shave at the very least 10 minutes off the journey at all times. Plus, you'll be between 600 to 1000% safer than if you took the old N8.

Cheers - no more getting stuck behind stuff :)
Should be able to get the cork-dublin spin to under 2 hours now :D

Down to about 1h 50m so from Dunkettle to Red Cow?

Yep I reckon so. (maybe a wee bit less)
It currently takes me 2 hours from the city to the M50 toll bridge

No problem. Hey, if you fancy a 'virtual drive' along the new section then check out these videos. It's a very scenic motorway.
(The camera is a smidgeon wobbly as the clamp I have for it attached to the steering wheel isn't fixed very rigidly.)

The Glanmire Bypass and the Watergrasshill Bypasses were redesignated as motorways last Friday. This comes into effect from 28 August, by which time blue signage and motoray restrictions will be in place.
