    how old?
similar happened to a colleague - in the carpar of work luckily, and not on the road. His bars were about 3 years old he reckoned
    u ok?

    Crap.

I assume you were riding when it happened. Did you manage to stay on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,833 ✭✭✭niceonetom

    Jeez, how did that happen?

out of the saddle climbing. rowing the bike a bit from side to side and it came off in me hand while i was pulling up on it - much better than it coming off as i pushed down on it i now realise.

about 4 years old at a guess, maybe more. they've been on 3 different bikes and been crashed a lot. they owe me nothing in fairness.

    yeah grand thanks. :)

hell no. veered hard to the right then snapped back to the left and got dumped on the grass, bewildered as to what had just happened. couldn't have happened under better circumstances tbh, no traffic at all and a nice soft landing. would have been exceedingly nasty if i'd been in fast traffic i think.

    Wowsers. Scary stuff

6016 alloy. probably been approaching fatigue failure for ages.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

Nasty. Better get something more solid, like carbon.

Wow thats impressive! Thankfully you are ok :)

Jesus. That was a lucky escape. I was just thinking the other day what the worst failure to have in a race would be. Bars/stem/steerer tube breaking was what I came up with. You really just lose all control.

reminds me of hincapies roubaix crash.

this is what his bike looked like:

... hmm doesn't like my image?

your front wheel has a odd dish on it! what wheels ae they??

yeah, you do. as i said, it came off in my hand as i was pulling up which was very strange, if it had come off as i was pushing down i would have gotten a face full of stem. if i'd been in traffic i would have been fucked - i swerved all over the place before actually coming off. s'ok though; no one saw me.

i would consider myself very, very lucky really. 99% of the time that would have been much worse. i'm not even bruised.

    yip. she nekkid.

no it does not, that's just the angle of the photos. open-pros on systemEx hubs btw. quick tip - never question the trueness of a man's wheels.

grain? well it has that sort of jagged crystalline look that comes with fatigue.

doesn't like your link either i think. any pics of crashes are always muchly appreciated though.

True dat. You could've ended up with several teeth less. Ugh. Horrible possible scenario.

So you never sprayed it in the end. How does it look with the unfinished steel? Is it still as clean and gleaming as the pics you took in the 'uglification not going according to plan' thread, or has it gone a bit dull?

    Christ mate, glad you're ok!

Think of it not as a failure, but a success.

Following your winter crash, a bionic rebuild by boards geeks has given you such superhuman strength that you ripped the handlebar clean off.

Off to the OSI with you; your future as a secret agent awaits.

i haven't drunk the "steel is real" kool-aid, my baby is aluminium (so... unreal? fictional? mythical? hypothetical? dunno).

the 'finish' is quite interesting looking i think. it varies depending on the light. the ali has oxidised a bit, but unevenly and in places the crappy clear-coat i gave it is patchy too so it has a certain translucence. i have some kermit-the-frog green paint that might get used at some stage though. it's nice to know i'm only ever a tin of notromors and an few hours away from a good base.

i still haven't taken any proper photos of it - and i'm not about to as long as i'm reduced to rocking using douchetard chopped risers. when it's back to normal trim i'll update the wiki (where my langster still lives //sniff).

I've a lovely set of drops you can use if you want.... or a nitto flat bar for pure fakenger goodness :)

thanks man. i'll survive with the risers (they're actually quite comfortable shhh) till i can get new bull horns. can't seem to find ones that are 44cm wide and have a non-oversize middle. may need a new stem too, or go to 42cm. we'll see.

edit - your flat bars (nitto or not) do not become fakenger approved until they are cut down to less than 38cm, btw. i'd hate to see you kicked out of the club on such a technicality.

    Damn, I'm way off so...they're 50cm -thank god I don't use 'em.

44 is too wide man, you don't want anything over 40 - Nitto CR123's FTW! (or in your case, the Nitto RB01

Nicely done to have survived that without serious harm to yourself ... that would be pretty close to my worst nightmare.

Everytime I fool around with the bike stem or handlebar ... I keep worrying if I have put it right ... in case it comes out in up hands.

    oh-my-farking-god-those-bars-are-so-sexy-i-must-have-them-NOOOOOOOOOOW.

drop looks a bit deep though.

and i tape the bars from tip to stem, so the famed nitto finish is, eh, irrelevant.

    slightly pricey too.

and hub-jub don't have em at the moment...

i need to think about this one. bars matter.

Yes, I thought that when I first saw them, and still do... they are very tasty :)

Not much bigger than your old ones actually

But you would know that it was underneath, that's all that matters

I know, and not many places do have 'em, which is why they aren't on my Mercian at the minute.... doesn't matter though, these are what's going on soon:

i remain unconvinced of the usefulness of track drops in the real world. my wrists ache just looking at it.

    look shit hot though.

Going by my own experience, track bars are only useful for riding in the drops. Not the most comfortable in any other position.

Might be working too much on those weights to strengthen the injured thumb!:) Glad to hear no serious injuries. Could have been nasty.

right, so your buying priorities are becoming apparent. on that basis i take it you won't be sullying those pretty, pretty bars with anything like bar tape or brake lever?

    that would look shit hot.

    Absolutely, practicality be damned!

No bar tape, but there will be some Yoshida Champ grips on -in clear of course.

Brake unfortunately is a necessity, I'm no Karma :p
