    Hi Lads

My 00 Renault Laguna is making a sort of whistling noise lately so i reckon the fan belt might be gone! 2 questions
    1. is it possible for someone like me(who hasnt a clue) to buy one cheaply online and fit it myself
    2. if i cant do it myself where is the cheapest place in dublin to get it done

    Cheers,

    JAMM222

It's a DIY job as long as you've got removal/fitting instructions or have done that sort of thing before.

This whistling noise - can you describe it further. When does it happen? How long does it last for? Usually a slipping fan belt makes a horrific squealing noise rather than a whistle.

Ignore the fan in the drawing. Yours might be driven by a separate electric motor

cheers lads the noise starts as soon as i start the car and it doesnt seem to be too loud while the car is moving but if i am stopped at traffic lights its loud enough then! is there a way of me opening up the bonnet and checking to see if it is worn out or should i just bite the bullet and bring it to a garage?

i think your auxilary belt is down the right hand side you may have more than one belt! it you have air con - looks a bit tricky to get at with the engine support on top.
TBH if you have any doubt that you cannot finish the job then i wouldnt start - if you get it off and cant get the new one back on correctly then you wont be able to drive it as you wont have a working water pump. so it means getting towed to the garage. it max a 30 min job for any indy. should cost a fortue to get done. also those feking french cars always have funny tools required to do the job

Turn on your heated rear window, wipers, headlights and other high current consumers. This will put additional load on the alternator which should make the noise louder and help confirm your diagnosis.

Dont go to dealer, they will rip you off. Go to some local garage. Changed Fan belt and Timing belt on my Laguna not that long ago. Not sure about Fan belt but to change Timing belt the whole engine had to be lifted up. If it is the case i would advise you to get Timing belt done aswell...
Cost me only €60 for belts and €80 labour.

Forgot to mention that my Laguna is diesel...
