i hope to get samsung le40a686 tv from the next lot that arrive in richersounds and the sony hifi i've been using for past 10yrs with my present tv recently died.

for those of us who aren't committed audiophiles but can't settle for the sound from a tv is there a decent compromise between a system for music vs home cinema? if i had to prioritise i'd put music first. can't afford both and the tv all at once.

If you want music, or simply better vocals from your TV , a small style stereo would help allot on that tinny sound.
If you want moves or are looking to watch Hi Def Bluray, well stereo is not where your going.
However a good AV amp should at least be able to reproduce music in a reasonable quality .
I know in my opinion mine does an excellent job, especially with the money I have spent for good speakers.

In short what you need to ask is- Is stereo enough or could I see my self sitting down to get full effect from 5.1/7.1

    on what sort of budget?

the more you pay, the more that the above resolves to yes. But in effect, the only way to get good music and good home cinema is to have two separate systems.

Now, I'm guessing that you are looking more to compromise on price between the systems rather than quality, so I would second akaSol in suggesting you should go down the AVR route. A step up from entry level 5.1 system would cost less than a grand all in, with plenty of options available from Richersounds.

The other option is to go for a couple of steps up stereo system using separates, which can provide excellent audio reproduction, even of movies. In this case, you would be sacraficing the surround sound, but the joy of seperates is that you can add to them rather than having to replace them.

Thus a grand spent on a high quality stereo system can be upgraded with a surround sound decoder, additional amplification and speakers to a surround sound system when funds allow.

thanks for responses, i was reasonably happy with the stereo i was using, i'll probably look into seperates and build as i can.
