he wont pay for proper coffee and thhere are no facilities to make it anyway so its got to be instant...........

Many years ago I found Carte Noir the best of a bad bunch.

Now if I'm somewhere that only has instant coffee I'll drink tea or a soft drink.

I don't drink instant, full stop. Would prefer a cup of tea :)

But, if you held me at gunpoint, threatened my children etc I would drink Kenco.

I'd go for tea if instant was the only option. That's the choice I had today and tea it was. :)

    Gunpoint you say?

Douwe Egberts, in second place Carte Noir (cue suitably sultry advert music)

Best? I don't understand the question.

If I was forced at gunpoint I'd happily gorge myself on whatever swill was offered.

Carte noir was about the best I remember. None of them really taste like coffee but I understand your predicament.

Surprised nobody has said 'I'd take the bullet' yet :D None of you REALLY love your coffee! :pac:

Where did I say I'd now drink instant ;) It's nearly a decade since I bought a jar.

Which brand comes with a free bulletproof vest and loaded shotgun again?

Nespresso, it's part of their 'lifestyle offering'.

No offence but I'm tired of hearing this line.

The original "issue" thread about Nespresso had some people suggesting it was the pinnacle of coffee.

Most threads about Nespresso are met with a "its fine if you really can't be bothered with any effort".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,722 ✭✭✭anotherlostie

No offence but I am sick of hearing it denigrated every time it is mentioned. Just because you don't have a pop doesn't mean others don't.

I think you are exaggerating a bit, and unless you sell Nespresso, I don't see why you'd care. If you like it, who cares whether other people disagree?

Turn that around and see what you get.

    Interesting, isn't it.

    Or an aeropress.

There never is an excuse for instant.

This is true. The Aeropress may look like something Austin Powers would deny owning, but it makes a great cup of coffee with very little effort.

Interesting device, luckily it only accepts pods/pads and not ground
coffee, otherwise I would have had to order one to just try it.

They are also a lot more expensive than an Aeropress.

    I know :D
Which is why I had to share, really could you imagine someone
standing there with it pumping it the 20 to 50 times to get it up to pressure...

Thaed, you almost make it sound magnificently dirty as well as magnificently daft. :D

Yeah I'd agree with that. If push comes to shove I don't mind Nescafe Alta Rica.

I'm just not a tea fan, never have been. I'd drink good (subjective term I know) instant coffee over tea most of the time. The only exception being if a good brand of Earl Grey is on offer, it rarely is though :( maybe I need to change my circle of friends, lol :D

Freshly opened jar of Blend 37 with a spoon of brown sugar and a drop of milk is pretty nice. It tastes nothing like real coffee mind you. Once the jar is open a week it tastes pretty bad as it oxidizes. Any opinions on what the best commercial espresso blend is for a gaggia baby. I use a lavazza espresso blend which works pretty well but id love to find something with a bit more character.

Often you can get Bewleys or Egberts in a supermarket (don't like Bewleys myself, find it bitter) but worth a try. Rob Roberts may have an offering too :) I have not tried any of them to comment, my experience of Bewleys is from the cafes. You can also get pre-ground Costa Coffee espresso blend in any of the Costa shops.

This thread might have some useful info:

Well coffee, sex and chocolate are my 3 vices. :P
and when you get along and your tastes become more refined,
being able to get 2 out of 3 reliably isn't bad.

Worst instant ever has to be those huge catering tins of maxwell house.
The ones were you can tell the lid of that tin was popped at least 3/4 months ago
and it sits for hours open beside the kettle or hot water dispenser at a go.

If it's a cup of that and someone with a gun pointing at me,
well I'd take and chuck at them, scalding them in the face with it
and then take the gun off them.

I always preferred Illy to Lavazza, less 'industrial'.

Do yourself a favour and try some freshly roasted/ground as opposed to the
    supermarket bricks.

I'd take the bullet. Instant gives me terrible indisgetion, it never seems to settle in my tummy and I can always feel it coming back up my throat. Instant coffee + stomach acid = gut wrenching pain.

The real deal ,on the other hand, is like silk slowly massaging itself down my neck.

This week I have mostly been drinking Lavazza Espresso.

Dear god woman, you'd either scald yourself or waste good chocolate!
Worst instant ever has to be those huge catering tins of maxwell house.
Amen to that. And they always seem to find their way into a mouldering prefab on a rainy day in a field somewhere when all you really want is a nice cup of hot chocolate, but instead you're stuck wondering if that green stuff on the mug is actually part of the chipped glaze or if it's a small lichen. Ugh.

I never waste chocolate, /caresses the bar of 78% coco soild bliss on her desk

At least that's a 'proper' mug and not cheap Styrofoam which starts melting and dissolving into the hot liquid it is meant to be containing and you are expected to be grateful that there is the option of coffee.
