I was never much of a clothes person, infact i once went about 3 years without buying any clothes. As long as i fit into it i'd stay away.

Recently i've decided to stock the wardrobe a bit i'm trying to go casually classy. Shirts with no tie etc. Want a semi professional look but i have no idea who to ask about these kind of things. Is there anywhere that can just give a basic layout of what a guy could wear.
Will shop assistants know enough to be able to help you pick out an outfit?
I don't need to follow year to year on-going fashion, Just enough well looking sets that will last a week.

    Eh, try GQ and Esquire.

For obvious reasons, they're going to be more cutting edge than most would care about, but they'll give you a general idea.

Most of the big department stores like Debenhams, House of Frasier etc provide a free personal shopping service. Book in advance and then give them an idea what you want and your budget. They will then spend a couple of hours in the store with you helping you pick out stuff.

Should get you started anyway. You'll be on here in no time showing off your new purchases!

Buy a suit. Suits never go out of fashion, and they always look classy. Find something you're comfortable with, and that you think looks well, and you'll be sorted. It's pretty hard to go wrong with a suit.

    +1
Remember that a classic cut will outlive a fashionable cut and that quaility always tells. You'll be better off in the long run with a couple of well made and well fitted jackets rather then with a wardrobe full of cheaper made jackets that have gone shapeless and threadbare and dated unbeliveably quickly.
I know that I have a few of those mistakes haunting the back of my wardrobe. (Shudders to remember the 'Miami Vice' days complete with rolled up jacket cuffs)

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

How old are you? Because that'll influence the style you should be wearing. There's no point telling you to go into Topman if you are 40, similarly you wouldn't be going into Marks and Spencer if you are 21.

Let's do it this way - name some male celebrities you admire (sportsmen, musicians, politicians etc) and perhaps concentrate on those who's style you admire. Not in a gay way, more just to get some tips and so on. So if you admire Gordon Ramsay for example, OK he always wears suits with big ties and big collars, and often checked shirts with jeans and boots when casual. Knowing this would make it easier to suggest how you can emulate this style.

If that doesn't work, mention your age and there should be no trouble recommending shops and styles.

please dont ask a sales assistant!!

in the majority of cases, their dummys or windows are dressed by professionals, they simply get a print out in the post/email and they follow instructions.

so what you see in the shop is not that persons taste!
have you any girl-friends that you can bring shoping with you?

id recommend magazines, however, bare in mind some styles dont suit every shape!

I dunno about that. I'm female and I have no clue about fashion for girls (no, really!) but a lot of my guy friends need help, and I don't do too bad.

    God, now I'm doubting myself.

But yeah, a good idea is to look at someones style who you like on tv, or whatever and have a good look and see where does the same kind of clothes. Don't try to be a clone or anything, mixing things up is quite cool.
