imop it depends on the child. I was 6 the first time i went "training " but i had been in gyms for as long as i can remember as i come from a boxing mad family so i was not daunted at all. The official age for competing is 11 but i know of younger kids that still train and have little sparing sessions and exabitions. I dont think it is ever to early to start them skipping and doing a bit of pad work if anything it will give them a bit of excersise and improve hand eye coordination and footwork

I would agree with all that

kids will learn something in a boxing club at any age

watch the roy jones documentary on how his father trained him to be a world champion from a very young age

its inspirational if not a bit cruel but as roy snr says "ordinary people dont know or understand what it takes to make a champion"

    quality stuff

We (monkstown) take them from 9 years old.

Although we have been thinking about setting up an hour for 5-8 year olds...........not boxing as such........more just games and stuff will a little pads...........or as one of the coaches said "a run riot class for them" :D will prob set this up next season.

I do believe insurance can be a problem and now they are taking them
a little later than used to be the case!

Kids cant box till 11 so most clubs wont take kids on till 10, i feel if they start too young the majority will quit and never go on to box at a decent level..

The thing is cowzer most clubs will take them at 9 now.........we had a kid who boxed for his 2nd time in the boy1 leagues.........he was boxing an 11 year old from crumlin who had at least 20 fights/exhibtions...........i watched this kid a few times now..........he is excellent.........one coach from another club made a remake to me that he had watched the intermediates the previous week and didnt see anyone with as good a footwork as this kid.

So the point im making the earlier you can get them is beneficial for them........of course like you say if they stay at it.

There is the flip side..........that too much success at a young can be bad........gavin brown is a typical example.........an amazing kid but by the time he hit 18 his hunger had gone.

My Brother is 9 will be 10 in April and he has been boxing training at home since he was 6. He literally eats, sleeps and breathes boxing. He does 3hrs training EVERYDAY after school, a mixture of jogging, skipping, pads, weights and bag work. I would go so far as to say he is absolutely addicted to boxing and training. He has even got dad to change his large bedroom into a home boxing gym and he has moved into the spare box room.Because of all his training he is outstanding at various school sports and won awards for best young sportsman in his school and county.

Last year he joined a boxing club which had a 5-9yr olds hour and after the first day the trainer said he could train with the older boys in the proper boxing hour, he is now sparring with 14-16yr olds who dont like sparring with him because he is 'too good' . His trainer has high hopes for him, its his 10th birthday on 4th April and he is having his first fight on 5th April (he lives in Wales and can box from age 10).He absolutely cant wait for it.
I think starting boxing young is a good thing, It is much better for a child to have an interest in something physical than coming home from school and sitting in front of a TV's, computer's or games console's.

Conversely what do people think is the cut off point for boxing? I have a friend has been asking me about getting involved, he is almost 30 now and I think he may be a bit too old to use it for anything other then some exercise and a way to get out a bit of aggression :) I am not sure how skillful he will be able to become really though

Well Anthony joshua didn't start boxing until 18 and he's one of the biggest prospects around! Also Freddy Flintoff started at 35 and remains unbeaten in the professional game :)

Just so you get your facts right...Gavin Brown was still boxing at 18 and over. Before you stuck a false quote up. MBC...hmmm sounds like jealousy, since Gavin Brown stopped MBC in the first round. If you knew Gavin Brown you wouldn't be saying what your saying...and whoever totally agreed take a look at what was voted THE best Amateur fight against Francie Maughan, which he won...oh and he was 18. So keep your lil mouth shut

MBC ... Or should I say PK...I sense a bit of jealousy there as Gavin Brown stopped you in the first round. His hunger never went and never use his name again. At 18 he was still winning. Pk he stopped you in the first round and maybe the digs to the head from Gavin Brown has made your mind foggy but his hunger has never left him. Do not use his name again unless you ask Gavin himself. As im sure if he sees this hed love to talk to you himself. "Success too young will ruin you" and then using Gavin's name...in future just keep it stum. I do believe you know each other and if you have something to say please go onto his FB and ask him yourself.
