I was tinking of upgrading in the summer. I drive a 00 Yaris at the moment. Now ideally I wanted to get an Audi A4 (pref 07+) but realistically I know they are bidg and probably more pricey than I can do!

So my car passed nct before christmas but there's lots of little things acting up - noises when i drive sometimes, engine warning light won't go off (althuogh it is apparently an 'electrical fault') and then the battery died there on Friday.

I was going to just replace this and see how I go but have been offered a pretty great deal on a 08 show model yaris, very low mileage, warranty intact, free servicing the works. Yesterday I was all up for this now am in two minds

Do I fix the battery and persevere til summer hoping nothing major goes wrong with mine in the meantime OR should I take this deal while it is being offered for fear tha something major will go wrong and cost me a fortune to repair??? Opinions appreciated!!

Seeing as you have a car to trade, you'll more than likely have to buy Irish.

A 07+ A4 will cost you probably more than 20k to change, as your own car is worth buttons.

What kind of deal are you getting on the 08 Yaris? What kind of driving/mileage do you do?

personally I'd drive a 04 Audi before an 08 Yaris (and I don't mean that the Yaris isn;t a good car).

depends what you use it for, how often you drive it etc.

Take the Audi for a test drive. You'll soon get your answer

yeh the audi is my dream drive but this year isn't great not even sure if I have a job after the summer so thinking Yaris is more realistic - i am getting it for around 9500 with mine - its brand new covered for 3 yrs etc whereas if I spend 20k on a second hand audi i won;t have that plus insurance and tax will go up!! Audi might have to hold off another fwe years.

I just dunno if its worth the risk hanging onto my car incase something bad goes on it next and costs me a grand or so to fix!!

Engine light could be anything, but a common problem on these is dirt (not visible) in the air flow meter. A spray of carburettor cleaner in the right place works wonders.

Re. something major going wrong ... it's a Yaris, so that won't happen. Good chance the battery is the same one that came in the car when new ? If so, not suprising it gave up after 9 years. 00 Yaris probably more reliable (if more boring) than a 07 Audi.

00 Yaris may not be very valuable but would be almost the easiest car in the country to sell, as long as it has power steering (some didn't). 5dr is even better again. Don't give it away too cheap !

ah yeah its the luna version 5 door power steering etc just wouldnt attempt private sale coz personally i wouldnt touch a 00 when 07s and 08s are going for around 10k or less - they're saying about 3.5k for a tradein which is ok and less hassle than private sale - just a bit rocky lately worried something could go

don't know what your financial situation is, if you have any savings and how you would pay for the newer car ...however

Keeping old car: new battery (80 quid) worst case scenario another 1000 -1500 for larger repairs that may or may not be looming

getting new car: 9500 out of pocket

That's a difference of 8 grand that you may sorely miss if the worst happens and you find yourself without a job in the summer

Ahh but the point is lots of people have 3000-4000 to spend and can't afford 10,000+. Hence the dealers have to work at selling the newer cars. Good quality clean cars of the type of your Yaris are very very hard to get and are always in demand. Have faith, it won't give trouble, and any dealer who is not asleep will take it as a trade in if you do go that route.

Some sound advice from Peasant also.

Don't rush into changing your car, it really is unlikely to cause you any trouble.
