What should I do about rust!?!

Hey - just came back from 3 weeks holidays, I know - you've no sympathy for me but how and ever....

I went to get my bike this morning, it's in a bike shed which is protected from the wind + rain, but is still outside and would be exposed to the cold.

My chain was nearly completely brown with rust. The cogs looked pretty rusty too.

Fairly p*ssed off, the chain was only replaced about 4 months ago...

Didn't realise it would get so rusty so quickly.

So what am I to do know? I put some chain oil on it this morning and cycled in, the cycle seemed tougher than normal but that could also be because I haven't cycled in 3 weeks....

All my bikes live indoors, the things are all over the place. Your shed will be cold and damp. Bikes need love too :)

If you are going away for a while, the best thing I can think of is to just blast the thing with WD40. When you get back, clean it thoroughly and re-lube it.

Be sure to wipe it down after a wet spin, like Raam says, bikes need love.

EDIT: Oh, that chain is gone, get a new one.

Depends how far gone it is, you could try cleaning it but especially if it is only a 7sp or 8sp chain just replace it, you can get a new chain for £4-7 (www.chainreactioncycles.com).

    Cheers lads

I'm only really a commuting cyclist, but I fear my bike doesn't get enough love...

If you do nothing else for your bike... keep the chain clean, lubed (not oily all over the thing) and rust free.
