Insurance

With all the penny pinching, I have decided to price around for the farm insurance this year to see if I can save money.

I currently have a whole farm policy with Hibernian costing €800 per year.
This covers the dwelling house, all farm buildings, 2 tractors (tpft), public liability on the farm and animal cover on roads.

Where are you insured and what's it costing?

I'm getting the new tractor this week and I presume it will increase my policy cost with Hibernian. Who do you have your tractor insured with and what is it costing for Comprehensive?

    Thanks in advance.

    Dan

I only have a public liability with FBD, but they give a €70 discount if you are an IFA member, (which is what it costs to be an IFA member!). give them a ring for a quote, it might be worth your while..

    Hi
I started shopping around on Insurance last year. I saved €450 on the Landcruiser and when it came to the time to renew the car my old insurance company matched the new one but I still moved saved €200 on the original quote.
My public Liability is not up until April so it will be interesting.

That seems good compared to what I pay with FBD. How many acres are covered with your public liability?

You should know better than to be asking questions like that ;)

FBD here -though Quinn have a deal on with ICMSA members at the moment which was considerably lower than my FBD renewal.
At least a third less so I'd give them a try.

FBD almost matched their quote so I've stuck with the devil I know.

    Hope that helps.

You may find if you divide up the policy & shop around you will save money,

we have the commercial jeeps with Setanta, €330 each comp. open drive over 24 yo

the house with Allianz approx €450

& the remainder with Fbd €3100
we have 3 tractors, fire, lightning & storm on the buildings & on the livestock also covered for electrocution (also covered for slat failure) , public liability, casual labour, personal accident, animals in transit, milking parlour, dairy & bulk tank cover, accidential contaminated milk cover , 15 Ha forestry.

Hibernian were about 400- 500 cheaper than fbd but when we went through the small print carefully we opted out, but some if not all the blame may be with broker

the cars are presently with Axa & quinn . but will shop around on all policies at renewal date

Was there anything I should look out for in the Hibernian small print? They rang me up recently to see if I'd take a quote from them. Cold calling normally annoys me, but I'm a bit horrified by my latest renewal quote from FBD, so I'm going to talk to them and see what they have to offer.

we changed to hibernian after being with fbd for years .. never had a claim with fbd but had a claim with hibernian last year fir antibiotics in milk - long story- but they where 100% they paid for my milk and tanker of milk .. and my premium went up only 100 euro they saved us 5000 between me and my dads premium ... fbd wouldnt have paid for my milk in the claim

a difference with fbd /hib over sheds burning down. hib will only give u the value of the shed before it burnt down and thats not the value u insured it for,so if ur shed goes on fire and u have it insured for 40k after the fire they come out and can tell u that the shed was only worth 35k so tough if the 35 does not replace the shed.wheres fbd will replace the shed once it was covered to the value of replacement.

Just got my quote from Hibernian (or whatever they're calling themselves these days) - 2000 less than FBD, so I'm going to go through the small print, but unless there's anything that stands out there, I don't think I have any option but to switch.

    Thats not strictly true.
If you have the contents of your milk tank insured, they will.
If you are making the claim under public liability ,they won't.
If you look at the specefics of any insurance policy that pays out on antibiotic milk,it will specify the contents of the farmers tank if thats covered.
I review everything every year and haggle with FBD getting as near/good a quote as possible and to be honest,I'm reluctant to move from FBD for the simple reason that everything I've heard regarding run of the mill claims tells me that they pay out and quickly.

I've not heard as good a record with other insurers.
That is a very very important factor.
A few hundred Euro of a difference ain't much use if in the event of a claim, trying to get money is a nightmare.

i fpound hibernian very helpful and it annoys me that fbd can send you a quote and then reduce it by so much when they hear another quote you got why not give you a good deal in the first place

you get what you pay for in my opinion. The cheapest may not be the best or most comprehensive in the event of a claim.

It is easier if all stuff is with the one company. if you have tractor with company A and Public Liability with B, you could find yourself with no cover in odd cases. the loss might be covered under A's PL and B's motor, but since you have the reverse, you are not covered under either.

Most companies will reduce premiums in an attepmt to hold a customer rather than to lose him.

before we changed from fbd we went through our policies and found that we where paying twice for some things !!

why didn't you just insure it once and bring down the premium?
