Why bother buying an m3 (even if you have the money!)?

Because the Golf is still a teenagers car :p

Because an M3 is a lot better than a Golf, no matter what bhp the engine is producing.
"around 5 seconds" will be more like over 5 and a half seconds, if it's putting out 270bhp. An interesting car, but it'll be typically over priced for its performance. The R32's still make silly money 2nd hand and don't deliver the goods that the price would suggest.

Very nice looking piece of kit - which will be the better tho the Scirocco or the Golf R20? Also makes me wonder what the price will be over here as it starts at £25k in the UK and the R32 over here was going for 40-50k second hand. Think it was closer to 60K new depending on extras (this is when I looked at them 2 years ago).

Shame that they're using the 4 pot engine, as it sounds rubbish. Drove the new S3 recently, and while it's a nice car, the engine noise is pathetic.

They should have reduced the co2 levels on the r32 engine and turbocharged it.

well if the pricing is sensible here it might work. hey - look what Porsche have done with their boxster pricing here in Ireland...

btw - wasn't out to insult m3 fanboys in my original post! personally I prefer smaller perf cars.

anyways - think this car should be good - much nicer than the garish focus rs in any case.

Might be nicer, but the Focus RS is still the car it has to beat. The Focus ST is better than the Mk V GTI.

each to his own but the excessive bodykit looks of the focus RS would put me off from considering it. the ST is fine tho (except in that orange!)

Interesting car but I don't think it will handle the same as an m3.

Curious if it's 4WD as VW have been making noise about joining the WRC, possibly with a Scirocco but that would require a minor tweak to the regulations to be allowed.

The exhaust in the middle at the back the same as the R32 suggests the 4wd, there's no point in making another Golf GTi becuase of the Scirocco, it'll be different! Something along the lines of a TT quattro setup, what else will it compare to?

I'm talking looks and preference aside here. The ST is dynamically superior to the GTI, so in terms of dynamics alone the R20T has a lot to do.

They'll be joining under S2000 spec, cause WRC cars are going after this year. I'm not sure what that entails though from a homologation point of view.

I believe the Scirocco is slightly too wide for S2000. Any project will be S2000 based with the proposed "upgrade kit" which looks like being a turbo and paddle shift.

That's not going to be an easy one to fix then!! Are S2000 spec 4WD too? I assume they are.

S2000 is 2 litre naturally aspirated, 4wd, control transmission. They were talking about seeking an exemption but I'm not sure if it's a goer or not. Meanwhile the Skoda Fabia S2000 is looking like one of the best of the S2000 cars.

That would be a bit of a engineering feat. I'm sure Porsche et. al. would be very interested to hear about it.

Looks like an amazing machine - really like the looks too - much cooler than an R32

looks nice but im struggling to believe the 5 sec 0-60 :p

also it will have to improve a lot dynamically to compete with the likes of an m3, evo x etc

could be a nice car tho

    It's still just a golf

Give me an m3 any day

I think VW are looking to take on the S3 and new Impreza with this car (if it is AWD) rather than the new focus RS and new mazda3 MPS (both FWD). I like the look of it and I doubt VW will make a hash of it, whether the markets there when they finally get it in production will be a different matter though.
