PS3 makes External hds faulty!

Few months ago, I plugged my external hd into the ps3 , it worked many times, but then all of a sudden one day it stopped working after i had used it on my ps3. In the end it turned out the usb connection was "shot" so i had to get a new enclosure.

Today my 500gb internal hd arrived for my ps3 ,i was going to install it in my ps3, so i got my brand new 1 tb western digital external hd to back up my ps3 , soon as i connected it ,i heard a crackling noise, and the hd wasnt working , i smelled the plug and there is a burning smell of it, something must of blown!
This was only the 2nd time i have used my brand new external hardrive.
If u use hds on the ps3 beware and be careful!

Im not sure why this happened me, i have 4 plugs on the plug extension , later on i plugged out the failed hardrive ,and as i used the ps3 i heard another crackling noise out of the plug extension! thankfully nothing seems to have gone since.

Anyone have any ideas as to what is going on?
Im returning the hd to dabs.ie and they will send it on to be repaired.

its a bit obvious isnt it...your extension lead

i think that is a stupid statement to make. I have a external HD plugged into my PS3 for well over a year now and it hasn't once made it faulty. I think its to do with your faulty extension lead

'Crackling noise from extension' = plug everything out from your extension lead ASAP if you don't want to lose everything plugged into it.

Get a decent extension lead with surge protection/guarantees etc. If your current one had a guarantee (e.g. to protect electronics plugged into it), see about contacting the retailer or manufacturer about getting compensated.

I'd replace that extension plug bank straight away dude. The last thing you want is your PS3 or TV giving up the ghost as has been evident with your external HD.

I've had the PSU on my PC overload and take out the motherboard rendering the whole thing useless. I then bought a new PSU which also subsequently bit the bullet but I've since replaced my entire rig and invested in a serious surge protected plug bank. Everything has been fine since then.

I've also got a surge protected plug bank hooked up to my PS3, 42" Plasma and surround system. I'd rather spend a few bob on decent surge proctection rather than risk losing over 2k worth of kit.

Thanks ,well this was a " protected and earthed" lead, I guess to fix my hd i need to get a new plug for my hd , but they will be hard to get as the plug has a connection on it that i dont see often.
Dabs are due to send a courier on thursday to pick it up and repair my hd ,i might just let them take care of it.

    Heres my HD

Well its happened me twice already!
Still i wont be plugging my hd into the ps3 again in a hurry, I never had a problem with the my external hds connected to my pc on the very same extension lead , its only when i connect it into the ps3 that i have had problems.

i have a 320gb WD hard drive connected to my ps3 constantly, i use it to store movies on it so i can watch them on the big screen , i've done that for ages and i never have a problem with it ,

It has to be the power plug.

Does your hard drive have an external have a transformer with a led on it? (Black box half way between the wires)

Is the LED lighting up if its plugged in ?

No it just has a plug ( AC adapter) ,and from it there is a cable running to the external hd , it connects to the hd through a small round connection.

Try changing the fuse in the plug.

I cant Its sealed ,and the smell of burning of it would indicate that its probably more than the fuse thats gone.

This might be a stupid question but are you sure you even need to use the AC adapter?

I was under the impression that all external HDD are provided with AC adapters for when you want to use the drive with a USB 1.1 connection, which does not provide as much power as a USB 2.0 connection. The PS3 is USB 2.0 so surely external hard drives should work without the use of an external power source?

That's not entirely true. You'll find most external h/d's <500 gigs don't have an external power supply and run off of the usb 2.0 connection. I have yet to see an external h/d >320 gigs that does not require their own external power plugged to the mains.

Cool that's that cleared up so :) What made me think it was that at the moment I use a Philips external HDD (160GB) and it came with an AC adapter that only needs to be used for USB 1.1 connections. Hadn't counted on larger size HDD requiring more power.

Bit of a misleading topic title OP

Have you changed that "plug extension" of yours, yet, OP? As taht seems to be the crux of the problems.

Ok im not sure what to do, dabs are still sending a courier to collect my hd on thursday ,all dabs will do is send it to the manufacturer, and process takes around 4 to 6 weeks.
Which is while long, Other option is to contact WD directly and ask them can they repair it.

Well either way don't tell them what you just told us !!!

And yes it is a misleading thread title, for the most part the PS3 is a great piece of kit, i've had my 60GB for nearly 2 years now with external HD's and the like.
Not once has it let me down !
