80's power ballads

    Ok, bear with me here....
I have an old empty dancehall at my disposal..yup think 1960's showbands, girls to one side - blokes to the other.. until someone plucks up the courage to walk across and say "wanna dance?"!! 2 large mirror balls above the (massive dancefloor) pastal decor, mineral bar(there was no need for an alcohol licence in them days!) The place is in pristine condition, its like stepping back into the 60's!! i want to create a bit of feel-good nostalgia in these bleak yet nostalgiry(?) times... and get the late 20's into 30's 40's demographic out for a night that could a) become a commecial success and b) become a regular thing (if popular) night out. I can get a tempory alcohol license and I'm thinking of having a..............wait for it..........80's power ballad night!!!!............ Yup, i've gone from thinking that the 80's were the most musically defunct decade (i've been a raver since 1994!) to the most hairs-rising-on-the-back-of-ur-neck brillant decade of all!!!! (sad i know ) i'm looking for your favourite power ballads of the 1980's..including slow sets love ballads(..Channel4 should think about doing a "Bring back the slowsets" night!!!! )ps I've copyrighted that ..don't even think about it!!!). Think Journey, erasure, meatloaf, flying pickets, .. maybe even def leppard pour some sugar on me!! Thoughts??????

There's a lot of great songs being listed here, but Hair Metal does not equal Power Ballad; Jump by Van Halen is not a Power Ballad.

anyway - me own nomination is that song from Karate Kid, you know. 'like a knight in shining armour, from a long time ago <synth bit>'.

Differentiation very much noted - the above linked thread incorporates both power ballads and power anthems.

I humbly submit both a power ballad "Bed of Roses" and an anthem "Blaze of Glory".

And if Peter Cetera is in there can I add Cutting Crew "Died in your arms" and Mister Mister "Broken Wings" (atho' their "power" credentials may be a tad lacking)

    Love this thread.

Loving this thread for I can remember the power ballad and the slow set. Ah great days indeed. I met the present Mrs Leincar during one of these slow sets. It twas in fact Journey's Who's Cryin' Now that we first danced. I should say our taste in music totally differed. She liked and still does Nik Kershaw. Nuff said. There is them that would say her taste in men was also dodgy.

The following were always in slow sets and while most of them were power ballads not all.

Air Supply - All Out Of Love
Makin Love Out Of Nothing At All
    Even The Nights Are Better

Alan Parsons Project - Old & Wise

    The Bangles - Eternal Flame

Berlin - Take My Breath Away

    The Cars - Drive

    Chicago - You're The Inspiration
    Hard Habit To Break

Cock Robin - The Promise You Made

Dennis De Young - Desert Moon

    Foreigner - Urgent
Waiting For A Girl Like You

Hall & Oates - One On One

    Heart - These Dreams
    Alone

Jackson Browne - Tender Is The Night

    Jefferson Starship - Sara
    Nothings Gonna Stop Us Now

Joe Jackson(No hair never mind big hair) - Fools In Love
    Breaking Us In Two

John Parr - St Elmo's Fire(was always included in slow sets?)

Judy Tzuke - Stay With Me Til Dawn

    Kiss - Beth

Lotus Eaters - The First Picture Of You

    Marillion - Keyleigh

Moving Pictures - What About Me

    Mr Mister - Kyrie

Queen - Save Me (With a perfest 10 second guitar solo. O.K I'm Biased)

Reo Speedwagon - Keep On Loving You
    One Lonely Night
    Can't fight This Feeling Anymore
    Take It On The Run

Split Enz - I Got You

    Styx - Babe
    Come Sail Away

    Toto - Rosanna

    Whitesnake - Is This Love?

Sadly The Scorpion's Wind Of Change dosen't make the 80's nor Maria McKee's Show Me Heavan.

On the other hand a lot of songs from the 70's were still being played in slow sets in the 80's. Examples are Randy Vanwarmer's Just When I Needed You Most, Meatloaf's Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad and Bob Seger with Main Street and We've Got Tonight. Also some songs from the 70's would start off in slow sets and midway the blokes would pick up their air guitars and leave the girls standing in the middle of the floor. Examples of this would have been Lynyrd Skynyrd's Freebird and Stairway To Heavan. We really were simple people back then.

Some of those power ballads are great cheese (or simply great songs) but c'mon The Power of Love by Jennifer whatsherface is just unforgiveable. :p

The Heart, Journey, Boston, T'pau, Bangles stuff etc etc are fine but that...
    WTF?

Edit: Must've been love by Roxette is a great ballad.
    Early 90's admittedly.

the night is happening in Donegal..

Funnily enough, when I read your op, I immediately thought of the dance hall in the village in Donegal where I grew up.

I wasn't old enough to go out at nights in it's heyday when people like Gina Dale Haze & the Champions or Brian Coll played in it but did go the roller discos there when a lot of your playlist belted out but I especially for some obscure reason remember "Reward" by, I think, Teardrop Explodes.

One Christmas night it was the only place open, no bar but lots of people and in my mind's ear I can hear David Bowie's "Little China Girl".

....... do you think i'd get away with kansas - carry on my wayward son?? I know it a 70's tune n'all but it's a power ballad right?? i think i'd enjoy winding up the 80's power ballad purists on the night about what decade it was released in!! ......................(lol .."80's power ballad purists"...I GUARANTEE you thats the first time that sentence has ever been uttered!) :p

and for that point of it could'nt we include ACDC - thunderstruck ...it's )bearly) in the 90's

Great song list, but based on my fuzzy puber-tic memories of youth club slow sets I have one worry......

All the girls heading off to "the ladies" the moment the first slow song comes on, and not coming out until the last one is played; bad enough for a normal 3-song set, but in this case they'll probably miss the whole night! ;)

There can only be one greatest power ballad of all time and that ballad is "Time after Time" by Cyndi Lauper.

Can't say I recall that. I do remember, as a seven-year-old in 1985, ads on Radio 2 (for that's what 2FM was once called) for The Blue Dragon bar and nightclub (outside Fermoy, Co Cork) and wanting to go there oh so badly...

Jim Diamond - Should Have Known Better

Anything I've forgot...........? Peace n'power ballads to ye all! :p

Just playing this now and came in to mention it.
    Great trivia about it:
"I Should Have Known Better" was a UK number one single for one week in November 1984 for Jim Diamond. The song was displaced after one week by Band Aid's charity single "Do They Know It's Christmas?". Diamond publicly requested that people not buy his single, but instead buy "Do They Know It's Christmas?"

    What a man.

Maybe add How Am I Supposed To Live Without You by Michael Bolton?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,252 ✭✭✭✭stovelid

    What a man.

You reckon he was hoping the saintly gesture would boost his sales anyway. :D

That said, his tune before that one, was one of my favourite songs on the 80s.

 There... is... no... god!!! :(

In fairness, I like when it builds up at the end and gets all epic with those synth chords... They were used for Radio Nova's rallying cry to stop its closure.
