Not getting full clock speed

CPU-Z tells me that my clock speed is only ~1596 Mhz (the bus speed is 266 Mhz and the mulitplier says 6). The CPU is an Intel E6400, rated at 2.13 Ghz - if the mulitplier was at 8, it would give me that. So, why amn't I getting what I should?

    Thanks.

It sounds like speedstep is enabled. This will drop the multiplyer whenever the system is not too busy. If you started something particularly processor intensive then it would shoot up to the correct clock speed.

You're right. Anytime I've looked through BIOS I've noticed it's on - didn't know that's what it did.

    Thanks for the reply.

No bother. You can turn it off if you like but you shouldn't need to.

Also, the power savings on a PC/laptop that's sitting idle or only being used for light tasks are well worth having so I'd suggest leaving it on.

I'll probably leave it on, I was just curious - I thought something might have been damaged somewhere or something like that!
