Right quick question for anyone who has done this. I'm about to upgrade my hard drive on the PS3 and was going to back up the data to my external hard drive. I have about 100GB of data already on the hard drive(its 500GB btw). I was just wondering will it erase the data already on the hard drive or will it backup into a separate folder?

Its makes a new folder on the external HDD, make sure the drive is FAT32 formatted or it won't be detected.

yeah its FAT32. i have it hooked up to the PS3 all the time anyways cause I have music and a few avi's on it. Thanks for the info anyways

When the PS3 "back up" to your EXTRNL HDD, what gets backed up? demos etc?, or just settings?

so for example could you back some stuff up and use them on another PS3 machine??

I wonder about that too. Is it possible to back up a downloaded game and play it on another machine? I assume not.

Just using back up feature now as im changing hds, tell me if i use the current ps3 hardrive as an external hd do i have to wipe all the ps3 data off it now or can i do it on the computer?
Also beware people it ,just seen this

You cannot back up your trophy information using the backup utility feature. If you want to save trophy information, it is recommended that you create a PlayStation®Network account and save the information on the PlayStation®Network server. To back up your trophy information on the PlayStation®Network server, select (Game) > (Trophy Collection), press the button, and then select [Sync with Server] from the options menu.

So if you've never done the long winded synch operation than you haven't got your trophies saved?

Yes, they are only on your local PS3 HDD and not synced to your PSN account.
Are you saying you have never viewed your trophies off-line or checked how many you have?

I have viewed them alright. ButI can do this by cancelling the synch Op, it still lets you view them.

    Good to know anyway.

Ok got my 500 gb hardrive onto the ps3 ,I had to have the update folder on a the external hd as it wouldnt format without the ps3 update , the new hd shows up as 465 gb , BUT it says I only have 392 gb free ? whats taking up all the space ?, I havnt any movies on it ,just the game utility data which takes up around 17gb overall,

btw my other ps3 hd was only 40gb capacity.

All I can say is I think the ps3 allocates a percentage. Don't quuite understand it myself.

As far as i know, the bigger the hd, the bigger the percentage the ps3 allocates for its own use, not sure why tho.

The EXACT same thing happened to me thursday night when I upgraded to a 500gb. Restore was grand, trophies fine, then played burnout and all trophies disappeared.

Hmm, when I saw this happen, and did it a second time, I rang Sony and the tech guy hadn't heard of the issue so he saif he'd pass it onto head office to resolve it. Still waiting to hear back. I was afraid to sync again with 0% as I thought it may overwrite the 70% on the server already. I might try this later so, although knowing me, i'll sync and it'll just wipe everything. :P

lol really? Its real annoying man
Something that i shuda added was that before i went to synch with server the final time i went online to the playstation boardus website and went to my username and went to my trophy list which showed all my trophys ,I then clicked refreshed my trophy list just to be sure they were all there and they were, then i went on to synch with server on the ps3 and got my trophys back :)
    Pheww
