So what do people think of it. personally I like what I see, also the little snippet of the radio one theme at the start of the music.

Don't know if it was worth five million though

The Daily Mail said it was €5m, RTÉ are saying €1.3m, the majority of which went on the screens at the back which should be used for a good few years even if they give the thing a fresh lick of paint in 5 years time.

As ever RTE gets its wrong. The "twlight blue" scheme is just bad, distracting.

You didn't notice! I think the designers need to go over to your house to personnelly let you know of the difference of the previous look. i.e. The colour, set etc etc. :)

You see flogen this is what happens when you quote the Daily Mail. I am from now on counting the number of times that people give out about RTÉ and they give this set and price as a reason for not money. :)

I think it is a good look far better then the previous set.

They could stop the people in the buildings turning on and off their lights :)

The Indo today reported (with a degree of sanity, not real criticism) that the vast majority of the spend was on redeveloping Studio 3. I agree with flogen, that the capital spend on the new screens behind allow for greater continued use than the old look. If they felt the desk was old hat in a few years time, that's all they'd have to replace.

Defending the spend on the project, Mr de Paor said "for us, €1.3m is a lot of money" but added that the capital was "from a surplus the organisations had from last year and the year before" and was allocated before the downturn.

The timeline for the project was very tight -- approval was granted in September 2008; the news team moved out of the old studio to allow for the necessary renovations on December 19; and the new-look studio was only ready for practice runs eight days before it went live yesterday.

Of the €1.3m, €500,000 was spent on the necessary building renovations. There is a new moving camera on a track which runs around the entire studio, offering a greater variety of shots. Instead of the jaded 'talking heads' set-up, correspondents can deliver a report standing in front of explanatory graphics, just like the weather is delivered now.

This is what happens when you read the Daily Mail!

In my defence when I did reference their article a few weeks ago it was because I thought it was too soon to change the look rather than the amount they were spending!

That said I pledge never to even look at the "Irish" Daily Mail again.

I do like the look of it - well it's at least better than the old style and is clearly far more flexible.

They'll be using it for more than the regular news bulletin too and rumours are abound that there is some new programming on the way, such as a business show (which would be badly needed). Could also be used for a breakfast show should those old rumours ever come true.

Also, this set is going to be a great asset to the broadcaster when they launch their much needed 24-hour news channel :D.

When did they change the one before the current one? It doesnt seem that long ago.

I like it but I think the blue is a little dull when you compare it with other news channels which are brighter. Other then that, so far so good.

It's a big improvement on the previous abomination.

That was my first thought when I heard about the latest change - but it really is a while ago, amazingly.

well at least we can say thats one thing the TV licence paid for. The news on RTE is the only thing worth watching so dont begrudge them.
With all the talk of goverment ministers salaries, i was wondering when people might start talking about the inflated wages the head of RTE is on. Bloody madness and we are the idiots paying for it. ( i know i know im the idiot paying for it )

I think they have, and they have being since long before the recession.

Also the million or so spent on the set went towards people actually doing work which benifits spin off industry etc etc unlike giving on person a million euro which only helps their inflated egos.

I remember someone telling me that the last RTE news set looked terrible in HD - because you could see it was made of plywood and blue-tack.

I wonder if the new one is "HD ready", so to speak.

I think over the last few months RTE's only news set was held up by stickytape, toliet roll inserts and blue tack, Mary Fitzgerald would have been proud.

My first thought was "Omigod! They've been transported to a Borg cube!"

My second thought was "How much did that cost?

My third thought was "Please let Brian sit down."
