Start wherever you like. To be creative, you need to play around, don't judge anything, and be messy. There's no such thing as a mistake or being "wrong"despite what your teachers in school might tell you! :)

Once you have some ideas together, you can structure it. Trance is pretty straightforward. But there's no point in trying to make a structure when you have no bricks, so just start improvising.

One good trick is to set the computer to record, set up a synth and just jam away. Play melodies, basslines, chords, drum patterns, random belting, wailing on the pitch bend, whatever is fun. Record everything, then edit later. If you can do that to a simple drum track, all the better.

    Just have fun with sounds!

Most trance songs begin with a basic drum loop. A kick and a few hats maybe. Usually a pad or some atmospheric sound as well. Then it builds up and the bass kicks in. And the lead comes in at some point. And its all playing and then theres a breakdown and then it starts up again. And then it ends.

    Garbage.

Well ya, that's how they're structured, but that's not how they're composed.

o dear, that Hallucinogen set at the Life fest last year sounded so good at the time but maybe it was just the dodgy chicken korma :p

There are many formulas for trance... of course there are exceptions and creative moments, but you learn tricks and techniques as you go along. Keep listening to current/old trance and pick parts out and copy them, by learning to do that you'll train your ears to be able to create what you hear in your mind.
