Utrecht train station . . . wot's it like then ?

I know this is a long shot, but you guys are well travelled, right ?

I am catching a train from Utrecht on Friday evening (direct to Zell am See - yaaaay - no awful 0630 flight to Salzburg and straight to the slopes at 1000 on Saturday) and I was wondering if anyone knows what the area around the train station is like in terms of eating ?

I know there are normally cafes and stuff around any other NS train stations, but we were bang out of luck last year when going through Rotterdam when the whole station was dug up and there wasn't much more than 10h old sausage rolls to be had.

So, can anyone recommend somewhere to go with 2 kids and the usual assortment of suitcases, carry-on bags, etc . . . close to the train station in Utrecht ?

The alternate (which isn't so bad) is to eat in Shciphol before heading to Utrecht, but it would be a pity to eat airport food only to arrive in Utrecht and find out there is some not-to-be-missed food to be found there.

    Cheers,

    z

p.s. for anyone else looking for a way to beat the absurd prices Ryanair & EI charge for flying to Salzburg at peak times, I recommend the guys we'e going with. I can't remember their name, but I will dig it up. Cheap EI flights to AMS, train to Utrecht, overnight train to wherever you can think of in Austria and return (with 2 extra days on the slopes) and we saved a good €600 or more over the EI/FR flights and we didn't have to get up at an ungodly hour for the flights. Is this too long for a p.s. . . . ?

theres plenty of cafes etc in utrecht train station
mcdonalds and all those types of things, its big enough like...

cant remember if there were any mad fancy restaurants or anything though but its a decent sized station with all the regular kinda places youd find in most european/uk cities

Cool - thanks for the info, it sounds like we won't have a problem. I did a bit of googling and it looks like there's a huge shopping centre next door, so we won't be stuck for something to do to kill time after we have eaten.

I remembered the name of the train people we are going with - http://www.berglandexpress.com

Utrect Train Station is great, its attached to a large shopping centre, so you have no problems getting food.

Thanks for the replies. The station was as described above - there was plenty of food places there, and Hoog Katharine (shopping centre) was connected by walkway, so it was easy to blow a bit of time there.

The station layout was the more or less usual Dutch type - loads of platforms below decks - stairs, lift and escalators up to a plaza containing more eateries than you can shake a stick at. The difference with Rotterdam is that the platforms are above plaza level, so it's a lot more enclosed and there aren't as many eating places. Or there weren't last time I was there although they were in the middle of a redevelopment.
