a quick Q... old stone building, has a few gaps in the stonework, what do you use to fill the gaps... I read somewhere that you don't use ordinary cement for this so what do you use?

    Thanks.

Traditional lime. Hydrated lime PM for specialist supplier. Mixed with course sand.

Do not use cement mortar - it does not move, so it will crack and fall out!

U can make the mortar urself
    6 parts sand
    1 part lime
    1 part cement

prob easier to get it from a specialist supplier though,
if you have alot to do definately consider getting an applicator gun, makes it alot easier

    IMO would get a gun,

once did a 3 and half storey house without one took bout 5 weeks, never again!

your local builders providers should be able to get u one, or advise u on where to get one, otherwise google might help

you'll need to scrape out any loose or cracked pointing,
clean with a narrow wire brush,
then powerwash or sandblast(messy and expensive) if possible,
make sure you moisten the joints before applying the mortar
