58K on an 'O5 Golf - too many miles?

Just wondering if anyone knows much about VW Golfs and how well their engines wear. I'm thinking of buying an 1.4 '05 Golf with just under 58k on the clock. The timing belt will be done before I get it if I do go ahead.

I'll be holding on to it for at least 2yrs and only do about 5K a year myself so that will kind of balance the high milage off I feel.

    Any thoughts much appreciated. Thanks

    60k - 4 yrs = 15k/yr. Slightly above average. Don't worry about it.

if you can get a good deal and you dont do huge mileage it should be ok. I was looking recently at trading in and dealers were saying my car was high mileage despite only having 8k km more than average for a 3 year old car so use the same reasoning if you can to get a discount...even though when the shoe is on the other foot i dont think it will make a blind bit of difference

1.4 litre 75bhp engine in the Golf is known for having issues and not great. Just do a search and you will find plenty of problems with them from using alot of oil to weak gearboxes. I'd be very cautious about buying a 1.4 litre to be honest. The 1.6 litre might be a better choice, it is an older engine but doesn't suffer from the same issues and has more pep than the 1.4 litre.

Either way make sure you have a mechanic examin the car thoroughly before buying.

thats good advice from bazz to be honest. I have the 1.6 in my leon and while it is an old engine its pretty hardy. Compared to my old 1.4 focus which would be similar performance wish to the golf you mention its much easier for over taking and you dont need to drive it as hard. If you can the 1.6 fsi has more power again and a six speed box. I noticed blackwater motors have a 05 one with just 8k miles on the clock at the moment. Looks like an english import but could be a good buy if you can get a discount

Base your decision on the condition of the car moreso than the mileage on the clocks and you'll be fine.

Friend of mine bought a Passat TDi last year with 120k on the clock. 12 months later with another 30k up and its still running sweet. He's even gone and fitted a tuning box to it with no adverse effects. He was considering selling it, but he know's he wouldn't get much for it and since its running like a dream he's as well off to try get another 30k out of it. :)

I would steer clear of the 1.4, we had one around that mileage, and the belt tensioner fell apart one day nearly taking the engine with it. A friends one drank oil like there was no tomorrow. 1.6 a much safer bet at that mileage.

    I'm actually selling a 1.4 golf '05 comfortline,with 33000 miles on the clock.
its only for sale because i need to get a diesel car cause i changed jobs and will be doing a s**t load of miles a week(over 1000) plus i'm looking for a quick sale, so its going cheaper than any other on cbg.

Its spotless and in perfect condition and a great drive, even if you are not interested in mine i'd still recommend one,

    Pm me for details :)
