Temp secretarial work still available in Dublin?

Hi all. I'm living overseas at the moment and had been hoping to move home (sick of my job, sick of where I live, missing my friends too much, etc.) but have found it impossible to find a job in the field in which I currently work. Realistically, it's a tough and quite specific field to find jobs in (in Ireland) at the best of times, and certainly not now that the economy seems to have gone to complete sh*t. But honestly, I'm tired of the work that I'm doing. My enthusiasm and energy for it has gone entirely, and I'm becoming jaded and cynical about it. I really feel I need a break, to get back home and get back in touch with the things I loved about Dublin and, eventually, the things I hated about it, which will hopefully compell me to get back into 'serious' work at a future date.

Anyway, having given you all that background, what I essentially need to know is whether the temping market has collapsed along with other job markets? My modus operandi always used to be to work or travel overseas for 9-12 months, then come home and temp for 3-4 months, save up a bunch of money, and move on again. I therefore have plenty of experience as a secretary, receptionist, legal secretary; have great typing etc. I don't necessarily expect to be able to make the money I was making 2 years ago (16-18 euros an hour for legal sec) but I would hope to be able to work enough to be able to pay my bills, have a bit of a life to enjoy, etc.

Do you think it's feasible? Am I mad to pack in a job (admittedly, only a year-to-year contract) to come back to Ireland? Or is there still a possibility to pursue a life outside of a job? At the moment, my job is my life and my life is my job, and my job sucks. So moving to a place where, even if my job sucked, I could still have a bit of a life would be a BIG improvement.

    Thanks for advice / guidance!

I don't know where you are. I had a similar experience a few years ago in Duesseldorf but that is when times were good here. To be honest there are admin jobs but they how many people go for them is a good question. I would hang in there if u can or try find something else. If you come back prepare to be some time off work unless you know contacts. Networking is the best way to find a job now in Ireland.

I have got one of the few jobs hiring and that is as a debt collector. I absolutely hate it after one week because the company I an working with don't do a credit check and give out funds to people who fail in all other places except for loan sharks (UK Market). Things are not going well at all here. I am applying for positions in Germany and thinking of going to Oz but visa options are not great there.

There will always be temp admin positions available - maternity leave etc., however the real question is supply and demand. One job, and 50 applicants, for instance (these figures are random figures off the top of my head, and not actual true stats).

Thanks guys. Just to be clear, I'm only interested in temp work, not looking for a permanent job in admin.

I'm wondering if there's anyone out there who is temping now, how many agencies you are signed with, and how often you are offered work?

As it used to be for me, when I was last temping about 2 years ago, I was signed with two different agencies, and would usually not be without work for more than 2-3 days max between assignments (at the best of times I was able to pick and choose which roles I wanted, which had better money, etc.)

I'm sure that's not the case any more and don't expect to find things easy, but need to work out whether I'll be able to get enough temp work to make it worth my while.

I have plenty of experience in this field (including legal secretarial, dicta-typing, front desk reception, etc.) and have a fast typing speed. I'm going to speak to the two agencies I was with before and ask them, but I'm assuming they may want to paint a rosier picture than the reality might be.

If anyone out there is temping *now* and also used to temp in the past, and could give me a comparison of how much harder it is (or isn't) to get temp work these days, I'd be very grateful. Thanks!
