Job prospects for part qualified CIMA

    Hi all,

Long story short, I'm out of a job. I've been considering accountancy in industry for a while now and a friend of mine gave me his CIMA certificate books a few months ago. Unemployment has focused the mind and I'd love to take this opportunity to make the change to accountancy. I've been studying hard and I'm about ready to do the 5 CIMA certificate exams.

The question is this, what will the CIMA certificate in business accounting do for me in terms of job hunting? Will I have a good chance of getting a part-qualified job with the certificate, but without experience? What is the accountancy jobs market like in industry at the moment? Is the certificate a good enough qualification to get me in the door as an accounts assistant?

    Thanks!

Hey I don't think you could call your self part qualified with the Cert. I have recently started for the CIMA Managerial level exams (exempt form the Cert). The course content looks really good so far. In terms of finding work showing you are committed and beginning the exams will definitely be of benefit. I have applied for a good few jobs without accounts experience and not even got an interview yet! But I guess you just have to stick at it not point in just sitting around when things pick up I will be ready and further down the qualification route..

    Hi Dublin09,

Thanks for the response, best of luck with the managerial level. I've missed the registration deadline for May, but all going well, I'll be tackling 3 at that level in November.

The Cert is 5 exams out of the 15 you need for CIMA qualification, I'd call that part qualified! The relevant work experience is going to be the problem, when the exams are out of the way, I'm going to look for voluntary accounting/bookkeeping work in a charity maybe.

Anyone else have input on this????

I am sitting TOPCIMA in two weeks time. It might be a bit cheeky to be calling yourself part-qaulified with no relevant experience and only the cert level. Generally anyone with a business degree is exempt from the cert level and you would not go around calling yourself part qualified CIMA just because you have a degree.

BUT as far as I know, CIMA offers no guidelines on this "part qualified" thing. Just keep going through with CIMA regardless of whether you can get a job: trust me, it will stand to you even if it doesn't seem that way just yet. It shows motivation and determination and it might just be what makes you stand out from eveyone else.

you could try get internship with a company for 3 months to get some experience. The big 4 do summer internships but I think closing date might be passed for this year. Since you interested in industry you could try any big companies in your area. Even if you got to work shadow for few weeks, they might be impressed with you and keep you on.
