bottom wisdom teeth

hi, my bottom wisdom teeth have been cutting through the gum for around 5 years now, is this normal? I can feel a small bit of the tooth, every few months or so the gum gets swollen and maybe once or twice a year I have had throbbing pain. The area around my left tooth is swollen today and I feel pain if I touch the outside along my jawline. Anyone had similar experiences, did they come up in the end or did you just have them removed?

I had the exact same issue, with all 4 of my wisdom teeth. You should arrange an appointment with a dentist or oral surgeon to have them removed as they will continue to give you trouble and can potentially cause infections in the gum.

Get lower wisdom teeth removed by a qualified Oral Surgeon only. Just my two cents.

Im the same too, one of the top ones is coming down fine but the bottom one has been coming up very graduall over about 2 years and the other bottom one has only started to and im in agony. I checked with a mirror and theres definitley not enough room for them to come up.

How much does it cost to get them removed???
Can you get it done on prsi?

    Hah, same here!
All 4 of mine started around 2004 and only the bottom ones have every really given me any bother.

Is tooth pulling covered by a Medical Card does anyone know ?

    Hey,
I have a similar problem with a wisdom tooth on the bottom. A front quarter of the tooth is above the gum with the rest of it underneath. The back of it seems to go behind where the bottom jaw joins the top. It doesn't really cause much trouble other than when I open my mouth widely and then it's only a mild pain. A dentist previously told me that as long as it's not causing any problems there no need to do anything. However it has recently begun to cause my breath to smell none to pleasant.

I plan on visiting the dentist soon anyway but can anyone tell me if it is possible to stop the bad breath. Also if I do need to get it removed how much will it cost? I quit my job and went back to university last september and do not have health insurance or a medical card.
    Thanks.

yeah whats with the bad breath? I read that because wisdom teeth are much harder to reach and clean theres a hugely increased risk of infections and gum disease. Could this also relate to the bad breath aspect?

I noticed too that the front quarter of my right lower is visible and theres a bit of a gap so food is constantly getting lodged in there and doesn't always dislodge after brushing either! If i try to stick a toothpick or some floss down there its so painful, like ive hit a nerve or something.

I havent been to a dentist since secondary school either...havent felt the need to until now, how do I find a good dentist?

Seems to be a common enough complaint and doesn't mean the space isn't there. Sometimes food can get trapped between the gum and the emerging tooth causing infection. They deserve some extra special attention when cleaning! Check with a dentist!

Try the Dental Hospital if you need it

i have had bother with my bottom left wisdom tooth on and off for the last 2 years and probably been on at least 6 antibiotics courses because of infection, so my dentist recommended getting it removed as it wasnt going to come up as bone was blocking it and it was sitting on a nerve, i have a medical card and this procedure is covered. so got xrays done in january brought them to the dental clinic in nwhb and got called end of january for check up, told def have to come out and would get a letter in the next couple of months to have it removed.

last week had an upper left tooth pulled and came home to find a letter giving me this tuesday for removal of the wisdom tooth - ah hello just getting over getting one pulled. so anyway spent week eating painkillers and tuesday morning came, my mum brought me in, apt at 10.20am was there at 9.30, all over and done and back in the car at 10.20am

the dental surgeon was extremely nice, the nurse was lovely, held my hand through most of it, i shook the whole time, never felt a thing, the noise was horrendous, i opened my eyes at one stage and he looks at me and says all done, i cried with relief, i had thought it was going to be a complete nightmare.

my face is swollen but i took arnica since last week and i do think this has helped with the bruising, the pain was bad on tuesday evening and i wok this morning at 4am in agony but i am actually okay, now dont get me wrong cant open my mouth fully and it is sore but i thought i was going to be in an awful state. the tooth i had pulled last week was actually more painful. everyone is different and i had read some horror stories but everyone different, best advice is take arnica before hand and ust relax when it is done.

Did you have a dentist already or did you need to find one ? Any trouble getting it done on the Medical Card ? I'm not sure if all dentists take it

I went to the dental hospital this morning. Didn't go very well I don't think, they said that the gum is sitting on top of the bottom wisdom tooth and there's bacteria, germs, food etc. getting stuck in there and when I close down and bite on it it's making it worse so an infection has begun!

They irrigated it with Corsodyl, gave me anti-biotics and put me on a waiting list to have it taken out - 7 frickin months!!
They gave me a syringe told me to get Corsodyl and irrigate it myself. Corsodyl is SIX FRICKIN EURO!!! For someone unemployed and on a medical card GlaxoSmithKline really take the piss - why is this not available on a Medical Card a la Solpadiene and other medication you can only get in a Chemists?

They told me to get a dentist to take it out as there'd be less waiting lists, as I said I don't know if all dentists will accept Medical Carfds and I'm flat broke.

Not too happy really but I suppose you could say that everyone without a dentist that ends up in these situations deserve it because they should've been going to check ups etc.

have a dentist she wouldnt do it, got a referral letter as i have a medical card it is covered, it is one of the procedures that luckily is covered. i was quite lucky getting it done, however you might be able to try a different health board area.

as for rinsing - warm water with salt can be just as good, i had quite a few infections so am glad to have this done

Oddly enough no one in the Dental Hospital said anything to me about rinsing with warm salty water

YEah you can get Corsodyl in chemists and places like Boots and perhaps some supermarkets.
