Lunchtime without Eamonn Keane

While flicking around today I noticed Eamon Keane wasn't presenting Newstalks' "Lunchtime" program. I don't listen to this program much anymore because I'm not a fan of Keanes at all.

However his stand in, not sure who he is, is quiet good and in my opinion the program is vastly improved.

Anyone think the bosses at Newstalk will notice this improvement and give Eamon Keane his marching orders?

That would be John Keogh filling in, open to correction, but as far as I know John is news editor in Newstalk.

Keano goes missing on a regular basis and Keogh nearly always fills in. Nearly always a better programme for it.

Much better with John Keogh. Clear, to the point and asks relevant questions, unlike the regular presenter. How Keane got his own radio programme is beyond me.

John Keogh gives facts and asks for facts and not sensational like Mr Keane!!!

    heard that a bit today.

Why do they beat the absolute shíte out of every topic even though the interviewee has answered the question.???

they seem to have a set time for every topic and if the interviewee answers early, fook me , panic, just ask the same question over and over again.

I'm waiting for the day some dude says"I answered that question already" and clams up .

That program is all about sensationalism when Keane is presenting, during interviews he obsesses about small or insignificant things the interviewee says while missing the bigger picture.

He relentlessly peruses some people with no reason or as the other poster says after they have answered the questions, while with others he laughs and jokes and it seems like he has made up his mind before he even interviews as to how he is going to treat them. It can be frustrating to listen to.

something i just picked up on there it just struck me!!!, I've never heard such bilious rhetoric somebody's description of the show as tabloid is spot on, sensationalist and populist in the extreme, drives me bananas,

doing something right though because I hardly miss a show!!!

They had Brendan obrien the last two days he is worse than keano he is normally on saturday mornings not sure about his interviewing technique considering he is ex RTE

"bear with me now listeners....this is important". Annoying condescending crap. Keane goes missing everytime there is a munster/ireland rugby match. Thank god. He's useless.

Brendan O'Brien is a fine reporter, but a shocking host.

bogtreader, His Saturday morning prog is unlistenable for the most part (Sunday is business show repeat followed by Wide Angle with Karen Coleman).

Yes, Brendan O'Brien's not the best radio presenter. John Keogh generally does a better job. If Eamonn Keane stopped trying to make the show about himself and trying to whip up everything into a sensation, he'd do better.

I didn't think Brendan O Brien was that bad but admittedly John Keogh is better. Why do they have these people in the background when they have shockers like Ger forgot his second name, Claire Byrne, Tom Dunne, Eamonn Kean etc in prime-time shows...what other gems do they have hidden in the background?!

I listen to Brendan O'Brien most Saturdays...'car crash' radio. So bad, it's actually entertaining.

I remember him back in his RTE reporter days...Today Tonight etc. I would have expected him to be more capable on the radio.

Presenting a radio show and just being a guest or a reporter are completely different skill sets. I've heard Shane Ross and Ivan Yates as talking heads on radio shows. When they're doing that, they're fine. But put them in the presenter's chair and they're awful. Brendan O'Brien falls into that category.

thebigcheese22 makes an interesting point. Some of Newstalk's stand-in presenters are much better than the incumbents. I like the Breakfast Show much better when Conor Brophy's presenting. Richard Aldous does sterling work on The Right Hook as well. Paddy Power was great when standing in for Moncrieff.

Well tbh I think Moncrieff is the most entertaining presenter on the station! But I can understand why hes not everyone's cup o tae :o

I like Moncrieff. It is a far superior show than its RTE rival - Mooney. But Mooney gets nearly 3 times as many listeners. Makes you wonder if Newstalk will ever reach a large audience.

Yeah true, if ya think about it, its no surprise tho - RTE can advertise their radio stations on the tv and that just gives them an even bigger competitive advantage.

    Can't stand Mooney tho

Today Effem was giving out about that recently.

I was wonderng, does RTE Radio have to pay to advertise on RTE TV? in terms of competion law are they allowed to get the ads for free?

As John Keogh is still, and prob wants to remain as, Head of News, why not bring back Carthy as Lunchtime presenter

Have to agree with most others, Keane is simply out of his pool in that slot
