Rust in your nuts?

Ahem! Pardon the title. I've noticed that some of the nuts and bolts in parts of my bike have become rusty. Only small bits of rust but enough to worry me. I take care of my bike (perhaps not as much as I thought) and was suprised to see it. Can I get rid of it or should I but new bits etc?

It tends to happen, not a lot can be done about it on a commuter bike. Constant cleaning would help, but it's just surface rust so it's fine :)

Presume you have greased the bolts, I wouldn't worry about surface rust on the heads.

Dab a bit of grease in the allen key holes when dry and new. Careful you don't put too much, you don't want it coming off on your clothes. You can clean off the rust you have now with a bit of light oil/wd-40 and a bush. Then dry, then dab in some grease.

Though going to these lengths could be considered OCD :-P

Thanks. It's not on a commuter bike tho. It's a mid-price road bike with campag centaur groupset. The rust is on the the campag.

Well you don't want rust on your campag. One way to solve the problem would be to replace all the steel bolts with titanium. But expensive and probably overkill. I have some slightly rusty bolts on most of my bikes. Particularly anything that points upwards, so stuff like the headset star nut or the little adjuster on caliper brakes. I don't worry about it!
