Penalty Points - UK Reg, Irish Licence

Stopped on the M8 at the weekend for speeding. The garda took my details and told me the fixed notice was in the post.

The thing is, he seemed to be hinting that because I was driving a UK reg car, and because I'll be changing the plates over to Irish ones in the next few days, I could ignore it? Any thoughts on that one?

I assumed that because he had my licence details, that was it. But, what he said has left me wondering.

Very doubtful. If anything, what he meant was that he wouldn't do you for driving a foreign registered car!

Points go on your license. I think kbannon is right he was just not confiscating and impounding your foreign car (which he might have had it in his head to do till he saw that you were a law abider).

yeah, thought that alright. Just the way he was talking got me wondering about it.

Sure not to worry - time to slow down.

He would need a customs officer present with him to seize the car

Not true, if the car was road legal for driving in the home country of it's plates, then it would be hard for a guard to confiscate it, but if road tax was out, or the driver couldn't show proof of ownership, then it could be confiscated.
He could also arrest the driver, and bring them to a station to prove his/her id and ownership of the car.

It's funny how people claim that no Custom's means no problem, remember while Revenue can sieze a car for the fun of it, Gardai also have the right to take car's from drivers in certain circumstances!

The garda does not need a custom man present to impound the vehicle,
many others have thought this and found out different.
the cost to get it back is approx 10% the irsh book valve plus the vrt
