Ive hooked my ps3 up to my Dell monitor with a hdmi to dvi cable, there is no sound on dvi so im wondering what my options are. Can i buy any speakers with an optical connection and hook them direct to the ps3? If so can anyone recomend decent ones that are reasonably priced. Are there any other options??

Ive searched here and google and cant really find any proper answers. Thanks in advance.

You can use optical or you can use the red & white audio cables supplied with your PS3. It's all very simple to set up via the settings menu.

So then id need to buy speakers that hook up via the red and white cables? My current PC speakers plug into my PC via a headphone jack kinda plug so i presume these are not suitable anyway?

Can anyone recomend some decent speakers please?

You can get an adaptor that will convert your red & white cables into a single 3.5mm headphone jack. It'll cost a couple of quid in Maplin.

At the other end of the scale, you can get 5.1 audio through optical or HDMI. Onkyo do very good AV amps, but they run into the hundreds of euro for an entry level system. It's really down to how much you are comfortable spending on your audio.

Get yourself one of these if you want to use cheap pc speakers. It's also possible to get cheap pc 2.1 speakers with the RCA (red&white) inputs. Or get some proper 5.1 home cinema speakers that uses an optical cable.

ps: Stop being lazy and look this up yourself :)

Id prefer not to spend a few hundred on an amp and stuff at the moment, ill keep that in mind for when i do upgrade though, cheers.

Im not being lazy, retarded maybe but i was looking at this stuff for hours last night, lol.

And what does the black part of that lead plug into, theres no input on my current speakers, only an output to plug them into my PC. Sorry if im being stupid but im just not getting it :)

The black bit goes into a 3.5mm input jack on the speakers which sounds like it might not exist on your cheap speakers. If they don't then you probably can't use those. Go buy some other cheap speakers that has a 3.5mm input (with the adapter from above) or one with RCA input.

His problem is that the cable coming from his PC speakers is a male 3.5mm headphone jack. That can be solved with a male-female adaptor.

Just go into Maplin or another similar store, explain what you want, and they can show you what you need to buy.

Ah at last i think i get it, so i get my pc speakers cable, plug it into one of these, plug my playstation red and black cables into the other side and im good to go?

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I thought it better to ask here then make a new one.

I got a hand me down of a new Stereo with surround sound and was wondering if there is anyway of connecting it to the PS3.

As far as I can see it has a Digital out and it has the Video/Aux Left and Right (2 sets of a red and white connection)

    Regards.

You should be able to just connect the av cable (the one that comes with the ps3) to the stero. Then go into settings, sound settings and set sound output to the av, it should be bottom of the list if I remember right. It shows a picture of it anyway so cant go wrong. Any problems message back.

Ya picture still goes through the hdmi cable, it's just the sound goes through the av cable.

It may be analogue in sound but its an extra 5 speakers of Dolby Surround rather than crappy digital coming out of my Small monitor's built in speakers.

    Great stuff.

Np glad to help. It took me about a day to figure it out :o. I was wondering why I could barly hear anything untill I changed it around. I got a set of headphones that hooks onto the av cable so you can get sound and integrated chat all in the one. I was using one pair of headphones for chat and another for sound got a bit annoying and uncomfortable as well lol. But all is good now
