harddrive not being picked up:help please?

    Hi all,

I recently bought an external harddrive that I’m having a bit of trouble with. Despite getting power when plugged into USB slot, it’s not being picked up on any PC or laptop I’ve tried. And it isn’t appearing in the storage devices tab when I go right click on My Computer and go into Manage.

Got a set of advice with the HD that states that if you cannot find USB HD in the computer with normal operation, please click “My Computer” > “Control Panel” > “System” > “Equipment Manager” to see if there is an item of “universal serial bus controller”. If not, reboot the computer, get into CMOS setting and set “On Chip USB” as “Enabled” either at “Chipset Features Setup” or at “Integrated Peripherals”.

Firstly I’m presuming “equipment manager” is meant to be “device manager” cos I can’t locate an “equipment manager” tab on Windows XP. Secondly how do I get onto CMOS setting, tried pressing delete button on start up but didn’t seem to get nay joy.

    All help appreciated. thanks

CMOS is the same as BIOS or "setup", normally there is a message on the screen as the PC starts saying "press F* key to enter setup" and you can enter it generally by clicking F2 or F1 but the key varies depending on the computer vendor or BIOS supplier, if you post your make and model I can tell you exactly which key it is.

Another issue might be that the usb device is not receiving enough power from the USB port, if the USB drive came with an external power cable you might try plugging that in as well

thanks R3al, but power isn't the issue I don't think as its a plug and play fujitsu HD

In setup I didn't come across any options that were set out in the troubleshooting advice above, i'm working off your run of the mill Dell Dimension 2400 by the way.

F2 is the key to press for CMOS on a Dell 2400,if you have tried the drive on more than one computer and are getting the same problem then the USB drive is faulty, as you bought it recently you should have no problem returning it for a replacement
