Hi there, wondering if anyone could give me some alternative routes to avoid having to go through the toll bridge on the m50 in the mornings? If i exited m50 at blanch what possible routes could i go? Or if I went through he toll bridge and exited at say ballymount exit, how could i get to sundrive road?

Also anyone have an idea of how much it would cost in petrol for a 1.6litre car to do this roundtrip 5 days a week?? Trying to work out if it is worth my while moving home from where i am renting!!

All suggestions welcome thanks a mill!:p

Why not go straight through Whitehall, Drumcondra, Dorset St., Nth. King St ., Church St., High St., right at Christchurch onto Patrick St, Clanbrassil St., Harold's X Rd. Then at the Hospice take the right fork for Sundrive Rd., or the left fork for Kenilworth X where a left diagonal turn will bring you to Rathgar. I know traffic would be bad at Drumcondra but no worse than say, Tallaght /Templeogue. As regards fuel consumption, there are so many variables that the only sure way to tell would be to drive it.

Erm, Sundrive Road isn't very near to Rathgar.

You could get a bus / train to the city centre and any number 15 / 65 / 74 bus (or cycle) to Rathgar.

yeah i know the train and bus routes thanks, wanted info for driving route, and i know a shortcut from sundrive to rathgar but only way i know to get to sundrive is coming off the exit at tallaght! There has to be a way to get there by exiting at ballymount i reckon!

You could exit at Ballymount. Turn left at the top of the slip and follow the road to the second roundabout, take a left down to the t-junction at Lr Ballymount Rd., turn right and follow the road to Walkinstown Roundabout. Take the third exit left onto Cromwellsfort Road and its a straight run through Kimmage Rd. West, Terenure Rd. West, Terenure Rd. East until you come to Rathgar, about three miles. Be warned though, this route is not for the faint hearted as it is choc a bloc, in both directions, almost all day.

Sundrive Road from Ballymount is either....
    • Walkinstown Cross, Walkinstown Road, Drimnagh Road, right at an Realt and onto Kildare Road taking a right at either Clogher Road or Kildare Road onto Sundrive Road.
    • Walkinstown Road, Cromswellfort Road past the Ashleaf and left at Stanaway, these are the next main traffic lights and cross roads and follow the road to the bottom.
    • Walkinstown Road, Cromswellfort Road past the Ashleaf and straight to the KCR, take a left here and follow the road down. I'd not advise this run as it is slow even during the day.

Sundrive Road/Larkfield onto Clareville Avenue and onto either Kenilworth Square or Garville can be quite slow at rush hour so be prepared for a wait here; there is also not too many rat runs you can try so you are stuck to the main road. One springs to mind but it's awkward and involves a no right turn rush hour...

As a side bar, do consider the N 81 turn off and Wellington Lane/Whitehall Road to the KCR or Stanaway

TBH, if your main aim is to beat traffic in the Ballymount, Walkinstown, Terenure area then I think you are on a loser. If you want to get to Sundrive rather than Rathgar then the route suggested by ham&egger, via Stannaway Road, is probably as good as you'll get. I think the road at the junction of Kimmage Rd. West is called Lorcan O'Toole, leading on to Stannaway, but I'm open to correction.
