Learning to Drive - fast and cheap!

Disregarding the old adage that you can pick 2 out of three of fast, cheap and good:

I am a 23 year old male looking to get a full licence as fast as possible. I have had a provisional for approx. 1 year and I have had 1 lesson, which I didn't follow up because I didn't like the instructor.

So - I have a Toyota Starlet available to me for practice if I get insured on it, and plan to get lessons, I live in south Dublin.

Cost is really important, so what's my best approach for passing the test.

(i.e. do I apply for test now, do 10 lessons and insure the car for the month before the test).

What insurance company should I use, what driving instructor should I use?

A cursory search didn't reveal any threads that would answer my questions, but if such a thread already exists (seeing as my situation is hardly unique) I would appreciate being linked to it.

    Thanks.

Got a quote of 550 euros for insurance fully comp as a named driver for 9 months which seems very reasonable.

What price should I expect to pay for lessons?

I think it's around 50 an hour in Dub and 40 an hour elsewhere.

I'd be thinking 50 an hour would be above the norm. 35/40 is what you'd expect in Dublin. But it does help to shop around as the cheapeest may not be the best.

Also, when you ask the price, then ask the price in your car. Usually drops a fiver or so, as it's your petrol. Ensure you do all lessons in your car, as the instructors car may not have any faults, but yours may have a sensitive clutch, etc, which you wouldn't want to find out on the day of your test.

Really good instructor, good price (which I cant remember off the top of my head, but Im inherently cheap so it must have been good).

Well guys, just a quick question here. Is it possible to get insured as a named driver for, lets say 6 months or do you have to get insured for a year??

    thanks..
