Bad Burn

Is there any way to rectify a bad disc burn?

I transferred some documents etc. to my (Vista) laptop to keep them safe while I flattened my XP machine to try out Windows 7. I was planning a fresh install anyway, and the beta gave me a push.

When it came to moving files back again, I decided to backup to DVD instead of going the Cat5 route again. I didn't have burner software on the laptop, so I got CDBurnerXP, recommended in the free software thread.

According to the software, the 3 discs finalised OK, so I foolishly deleted the data from the laptop. Now, a week later, the discs can't be read on either machine. They sound like they're struggling when inserted, trying for a couple of seconds to ramp up to a constant spin, but dropping down and trying again. Other discs work in the drive, so it's the discs at fault.

Any suggestions? Or are the files gone for good? :( I knew I should have got a portable HDD. :o
