    hey all,

we have a spare pine mantlepiece in our shed and were thinking of spraying it black to swap with the one we currently have in our sittingroom.

anyone done this before and can advice on prep and paint used?

I haven't heard of spray painting a pine surround personally. I have spray painted a cast iron fireplace alright and had to use a heat resistant type that I got in a fireplace shop. Not sure if you can use it on pine though.
Because spray paint is a very thin layer, and because pine would tend to expand and contract more than cast iron would, it may not work.
You should call into a fireplace shop and ask them if it's possible or advisable.
