Lost my Desktop - Help!

Hi there, basically I have lost every thing but the background picture on my screen on start up - no windows icons, nothing at all. I was on a guitar chords site and loads of these pop-ups and warnings came up about system being possibly infected with spyware etc. and a unfamiliar window popped up asking to click to repair now ( or continue unprotected) but thinking this could be rogue antispyware I basically clicked 'deny' and 'block' to everything, couldn't get rid of the damn window for a while and when I did everything was lost on my desktop. I tried start-up again and no luck. Can anyone help?! Btw I had Uniblue registry booster/cleaner and also using Mozilla Firefox.

Try ctrl+alt+delete and then go into task manager.

Then file > new task (run)

Then enter explorer.exe and see if that loads things up for you?

Did you try reboot the machine in safe mode?

OP in your case you may want to run a virus and spyware scan.

Yep, tried task manager and, reboot and all the commands in safe mode and still no bloody luck. At least thankfully I have another PC upstairs, which I am using now, but this happened on the laptop which is always in my kitchen and so handy. I'm sooo frustrated now!!

Do you still have your start button & taskbar or are they gone too?

Unless you try Hirens Boot cd and repair it from that or a window restore using the Vista installation dvd if all that fails then its a clean install.

If he is able to get into task manager then he should be able to stop whatever process is disabling the system.

Cuddlesworth, when I go to task manager....Processes... there are about 20 items listed such as svchost etc etc, what would happen if I removed all of these? or should I not?!

Removing any of the processes will cause no harm but some of them are required.

If you press & hold down the Ctrl key & then press the ESC key does it give you the start menu?

You could remove the drive & caddy it to another machine & then run Malwarebytes to scan it.

Or as suggested earlier you could boot from a downloaded boot CD to effect the repair.

svchost is a normal process. and its normal for there to be a few of them.

Google the name of any process before killing it eg. google svchost.exe and it will describe what the process is.

can you try a few of the following:

    windows + R
    (should see run dialog)

task manager - new task... cmd [enter]
(should see a command line appear)

if you have flash drive and you can get a command line, you might be able to get portable spybot search & destroy or portable clamwin onto it
