What? You want some sort of communist society where our elected Ministers drive to work in tractors and get trains to China??

Come off it, these are elected ministers who are representing our country.

Martin Cullen is actually a very knowledgeable man - and you'd be surprised at what he knows.

To say that the Olympics was a 67000 Euro holiday is a bit much.

Firstly, it was work. Unless China is Mr Cullen's favourite holiday destination then he would probably have preferred to go on holidays somewhere else, perhaps with his wife and family. Not with 2 civil servants.

The cost per person is 22,000 each.

Allow, say €3000 per person for flights
Allow, say €250 per night accomodation (14 nights) (3,500 euro)
Allow, say €500 per day for entertainment and food etc. (7,000 euro)
Allow, say €500 per day for transport (7,000)

You're not long accounting for 22,000 per person.

aint it great how all these are coming out now with the 'session about. god only knows what the f8ckers were doing during the "good times". the amount of money wasted by this goverment is astronomical.

another farce, add in the private jet, the health pay system joke, the voting booths never used (and the millions to store them), luas and countless other projects over budget.

all these would contribute nicely to a cancer research facility or 10 around the country amongests other things.

He didn't even go to support many of the irish competitors.
10,000 for meals? FFS that's probably more than it cost to feed all our athletes. Clueless Cullen indeed.
Sorry, i take the clueless bit back, he's smart. smart enough to know the tax payers are idiots and he'll get away wih it.

    Why the personal insult?

How is it waste? We send an Olympic team, so therefore out Sports Minister should be there.

How would people have reacted if nobody from Government went, and we had won a gold medal.

Headlines would have been "Government too tight to send Minister to China"

Wasted? Every governemnt in the world has these bills, and one's a lot higher. It's the way of government. It just suits everyone to jump on the "we all hate FF" bandwagon.

I take it if anyone else was in government, the country would be great and every member of the party would be in the Dail from 9-5 EVERY Mon-Fri , 48 weeks and year and never leave the country?

Anyon want to do up an itinerary of the UK sports minister for last year?

so ud rather the money squandered than on proper things like health and education and roads? next time your stuck waiting for a bus, or you luas/tram is late or your stuck in traffic cos our infrastructure is so bad, remember that somebody has been pampered and treated to a 5 star trip on the money which could have come from your taxes!

as ive already said, god only knows what they squandered in the previous 10 years when nobody cared.

And you'd be whinging if they sent no one, you just want an excuse to act like a child who didn't get his sweets.

tbh there is a happy medium somewhere between not going and spending 67000 euro to go.

Why bother even sending the athletes to the Olympics then?
It seems like a total waste of money when little Timmy still hasn't got his dialysis treatment.

19 nights for 4 people = 67000...a chunk of that might have been better spent on the athletes and their preparations +training for the olympics...:D;):p:):o:mad::(:cool::P:confused::pac:

Because it would save on processing speeding tickets?

Ah no ,seriously though , I could save myself about a tenner a week by changing my driving habits.
We all have wastes in places that are necessary ,the chinese government are very good to ireland as far as I know.
We have loads of students here that is great for us ,the least we can do is show some respect to them once in a while.

ah *** off to be honest, we could have sent dustin the turkey for all i care, i couldn give 2 f*cks. what i do care about is another example of wasted money.

why do we need a goverment minister over there simple as. i sure theres better sporting embassadors that were already there that could have saved us 67000. anybody that defends this farce,is just looking for a reason to be awkward.

Not sending representatives of the government would have been very insulting to the Chinese, and they are an important trading partner for us.
They are hugely into their 'protocol'.
Not sending someone from the government could/would have been intrepreted as some sort of proTibet antiBeijing snub by various vested interests thus causing damage to Ireland.

Sending a sporting ambassador would not have been an acceptable replacement, I suspect we have no-one who is internationally recognised as such anyway.

Sending a minister who happens to both Minister for Sport and for Tourism seems the most sensible one to send to an international gathering of people from 150+ countries.

In no way should this be taken as defending any excess, first class travel is wasteful and the hotel bill seems ott as well.

Can we have "Politician Hanging" as an Olympic sport? They wouldn't want to be going then.

Yes because Ireland is a 3rd world country. All the raw materials needed to build the Port tunnel and all the infrastructure projects under the NDP were transported by mules and we are only just making the changes from Homing pidgeons to email.

Obviously 67000 is a bit excessive but what kind of message does it send to other nations if our government reps are flying economy on Virgin to the Olympics and staying in a Travel lodge?

So just what they ate could pay one OAPs pension for a whole year. And then they try to rob their medical cards.

Rightly firstly can i say that we didnt ahve to send 3 and you can rest assured that they took the most expensive of everything... its like at the last years 6 nations 3 or 4 ministers were in twicks for the oreland v england game they took the government jet because according to them they were on "official " business.... its about time these muppets were sorted out

No, it's typical EVERY country. They all had people at the games and I'll bet the bills were all very similar.
