tax refund

    ive heard of people claiming tax back on there kid's after a number of year's,especially if there relationship is over,i was wondering if it's possible to do so if the child is a british citizen(i'm irish)and still reside's in the uk with his mother?the child in question is now 14 and i have regular contact and pay maintenence.

    The tax credit you are referring to is the One-parent family credit (OP1).
    In order to qualify for this relief you must:
    For the year you are claiming, not reside with anyone as husband or wife whether married or not.
    and
    The child must reside with you at some point through out the year.
    If you satify these conditions then you should be entitled to the relief.
    For the year you are claiming, you must also be paying tax otherwise you would be unable to get 'tax' relief. If you qualify for the current year the extra credit of 1860 will be implemented through your credits which will reflect through your wages. For previous years you will receive a refund. :)
