    Hi

Just a query, i had 2GB in a unibody MB Pro which was fine but i upgraded to 4GB with crucial RAM. Since installing i notice the system uses a lot more idling RAM i.e. i just have the bear minimum open. It uses approx 1GB just after startup.

Its no biggy i have 3GB more to play around with, just more out of interest than anything else

    Any ideas?

    D

    Cheers

no immediate improvement but only using general browsing and email so far. I use it a lot for a second screen running windows through parellals (i know but i have to for work)

I also run sling to catch up on the news and before it was approaching max ram usage VERY quick but coping brilliantly, i just wanted some more breathing space.

Reason why i got it was i wanted 4 gig when buying but was mad expensive. Im coming from a MS background so 4GB was minimum but MB copes A LOT better with 2 GB to start off with.

I will be using it for more graphic intensive programs in next few weeks so i would say that is when the extra RAM will kick in.

It sounds perfectly normal. I know it looks nice to see loads of free RAM but that's not how OS X works. Unused RAM is wasted RAM. If there's extra RAM there OS X will use it. And it won't release it until it has to. OS X's memory management is quite complex. The idle RAM stat alone is not an accurate reflection of memory usage.

Thanks Sad Professor, I still have some inbuilt paranoia from my MS days when i used to see RAM being ate up by rogue apps. I know Mac's a are a different story altogther though. That was partly my reason for switching
