How to use chokes???????

    Just collected my new gun today.Beretta Silver Pigeon 3 O/U 28'' Game. Igot chokes with it but hav'nt a clue what to put in. i shoot game throughout the season and do a bit of clays the odd sunday morning at the local. chokes i got were (1Rim Notch=FULL) (3Rim Notch=MODIFIED) (4Rim Notch=IMPROVED CYLINDER) (5Rim Notch=CYLINDER) (No Notches=SKEET). I didint get a 2 Notch which = IMPROVED MODIFIED. Should i have got this and what one do you think i should use?

    fiesta the game season is just over ,so learn how ur gun shoots clays with a 7.5 -28grm .it will be a learning curve for you .
    i can tell you quarter n half and i wound not be wrong .
    just go experiment .dont be afraid to shoot full and full you will learn a lot .i will shoot all practice with full extra full .
    and open up to the max for competitions
    george digweed reckons dont be afraid to miss or fail as you will learn some thing .it has worked for me .

    JW is right - practice with the tightest chokes you have but I'd try 24 gram cartridges rather than 28's - little less felt recoil, especially with the lighter game gun.

    lads thanks for that info but i intend to try different ones BUT my problem is how do i know which ones are 1/2, 1/4 , 3/4 ,Full . Thats my prob.

    Basically, the more notches the less the choke. Approximates are:
    1 notch is full
    2 notches is three quarter
    3 notches half
    4 notches quarter
    5 notches is skeet
    and no notches might be extra full - I think,but am open to correction! In any case a visual inspection of the thickness of the outer rim of the choke will make this clear!

    a vernier caliper should do it, or you could always get a carrot and (with chokes removed from barrells) insert carrot into chokes unthreaded end , the further in the carrot goes... the higher the number of choke! :D

    Known in the business as a carrot gauge :D.
