Moving files

Is there anyway I can move files from my laptop to my PC using just an ethernet cable or any other type of cable?

I know I could just use a memory stick or burn them to DVD's and then copy the files but I have ~20GB of data to move so if there was a direct way to do it with a cable it would be easier. My laptop has Vista on it but the PC has XP.

A crossover ethernet cable would do it, once permissions on the two are set up

Is there a difference between a normal ethernet cable and a crossover ethernet cable?

Any way you could explain how to do it?

Yes, Crossover is needed to network two computers together, HERE is some info about crossover cables, you would also need to set folder view permissions on the folders you wish to transfer over before its possible also

Ah ok thanks, don't think it's worth buying a new cable for I'll just do it with memory sticks or DVD's I think.

A DVD holds 4.3Gig Approx, so should only take 4 or 5 DVDs to transfer over all the data

You'd probaby be better off with a memory stick than DVDs in my opinion. It'd be much quicker i reckon, plus you'll always have the memory stick if you need to use it again.

It'd probably work out cheaper than DVDs too (although it's been a while since i bought blank DVDs, so im not sure).
