Can anyone tell me which of the BMW dealers around Dublin is the best for servicing? My BMW is due a service shortly and I don't want to go near Joe Duffy's again if there is a better option . I've had it in there a couple of times and I'm not very satisfied with their servicing or their general attitude.

Frank Keanes if it's a newish one and you want to stick to a main dealer or AC car sales if you want to get the best service, but they are an Indy so you wont get the main dealer stamp.

I want to go to a main dealer, just want to try a different one. Might give Keanes a go. I think Duffys have tried to bull$h1t me anytime I've been there like lying about small things such as saying the car had been hoovered when it hadn't etc etc.

I have used a number of dealers (M&G, Duffys, Keane's (and also the former dealer Maxwells) and would never use them again!
Try AC Cars - BMW Specialists. www.accarsales.com

Yea, I have to agree with you on this, I have dealt with 2 of them and found them to be dreadfull, especially the dealer near the M50.

The sales staff had a terrible attitude, the labour charges were borderline illegal, a manager even told me that the USA models were made from cheaper metal than the European models, when I questioned price difference.

    +1 for AC

have very little faith in any Dublin BMW dealers but maybe go and call Frank in Colm Quinn BMW in Athlone, good guy who actually cares :)

Give yourself a day out in the midlands

My experience with the BMW dealer network has been fairly good.

They replaced a fairly expensive major component out of warranty for free when I kicked up a fuss.

I think thats the big problem with BMW dealers, as there so expensive to fix you have to kick up a fuss to get any "goodwill" (warranty outside set period/limits) contribution towards repairs.

At least the facility was there. Saved me a at least 2 grand+ so it was worth the fuss!

The facility is there with every main dealer.

Have seen cases of "Granny" brings in her 5yr old Opel with the Elec steering rack shot, car has 30k on the clock as it only goes to the shop and back.

What do Opel say when called about "goodwill"? All repair costs covered inc labour & parts as they take all things into consideration. Obviously this doesnt happen every time but at least the aftersales dept had the balls to ask!

What im trying to say is dealers dont like to "go to the trouble" of requesting goodwill as it involves making a phone call or email and they cant charge the manufacturer the same time/costs they will charge you. So thats why you have to kick up a fuss.

    Sorry for the thread hi-jack

I only have good things to say of Murphy & Gunn, Milltown. Been using them since 2000.

My car is due an Inspection 2 - probably the most expensive of BMW's routine maintenance services. Here's what I've discovered so far....

Rang 3 different BMW dealers in Dublin. All service personnell busy and promised a call back. Not even a single phone call received!

    AC Cars - quoted €520.

Bavarian BMW Belfast - £400. As soon as I asked for a discount he knocked off 10% so it's down to £360.

Guess which option I took? Now where's that Ikea catalogue.....

There's your answer OP. A friend of mine recently did the same with his 520 - the dealer even dropped himself and the gf into Belfast for a day's shopping and picked him up later on that day in his newly-serviced car.

They both sound reasonable, an Inspection ll for an X5 or a 7 series is €1400, which is ludicrous. I'd go with the Belfast one if it doesn't inconvenience you too much, UK dealers have a sterling reputation, it also helps that you got a better deal.

Can Ned or any other BMW guys here please explain why inspection 2 is so expensive.

Nope, I've no knowledge of it, or what it consists of.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

Inspection ll is a highly comprehensive service, so comprehesive in fact that I have my doubts as to whether any dealer does half of the things on the list anyways. To see the exact items that are checked, take a look in your service manual and it will show you detailed tables of what is performed.

Here's a quick detail of the items checked based on 2001 Inspections, they will have changed little, if at all:

    http://www.e38.org/BMW%202001%20Service%20Checklist.pdf

Also something to bear in mind is that if parts need replacing, like brake pads or discs, they AREN'T even covered and are charged as an additional item.

Just reading the comments above the Main BMW Dealers based in Dublin - are they really that bad at servicing or is it more their attitude i.e. arrogance etc?

Can I get some examaples apart from the ones already mentioned as I have an E90 325i and have just a it first oil service at Joe Duffy and found them ok.

    Thanks...

How much did Joe charge for that oil service?

Thanks Voodoo, thats a lot of checks on checks, I thought auto gbox oil would be every 4 or 6 years.

If you have the BMW service package is everything covered?

    €370

    €370

Can you post the details of service work carried out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,141 ✭✭✭notahappycamper

Just pulled out the invoice, so here goes:

Service - standard scope, checked control messages, checked warning lights and telltale lamps, reset service interval. €27.73

Engine oil service, replaced oil filter and renewed oil, checked all lights and levels, topped up screenwash, checked all brakes and suspension €41.60

Micro filter service, repalced bot aircon micro filters €13.87

Brake fluid service, replaced fluid in ASC+T brake system €55.47

    Environmental waste disposal €10

    1 oil filter @ €13.46
    7 Litres of Castrol SLX @ €15 a litre €105
    1 consumables @ €13.67
    1 microfilter @ €45.28

    VAT €44.02
    Total €370.10

Just as a matter of interest, next time it's due up for a service is it possible do you know as opposed to be sitting around waiting for it to come back from the service and being offered countless cups of coffee, but to actually observe the service taking place and see exactly how they are carrying out the service and "looking after" your car? Should I ask or would I just be told no for " health and safety" reasons?

That's not a bad price at all, perfectly reasonable I would say, glad to see someone spotted the brake fluid needed doing. 7 litres of oil, what do you drive? Mine takes 6.5 litres.

    That is very expensive yeah...
    Let's be serious

I don't think so. A lot of Indys won't charge you VAT and won't do a third of the things that are listed above. It's a little on the high side compared to other brands, but that's to be expected.

Yeah my bad I actually missed the other stuffs they did, I did see the oil change only, so for 370 euro that would have been expensive...
Yeah for what they did, it is a alrit price. Seen worse.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

I often made the same mistake myself when I heard about €300+ oil changes about a year ago, couldn't believe it. But they do lots of other checks and replacements too. Everything he mentioned above is standard in a BMW oil service, bar the brake fluid swap.

    It's an E90 325i. It's a 2.5 Litre 6 cyclinder so it needs 7 litres of oil.

That's nuts, 2.8 straight six here to and uses less oil, I guess they've become less effecient!
