I've installed it, turned it on thats nearly it. I did crash initially but then a restart and it worked. I haven't explored what it does fully yet.

I've really gotten into and infact if I can find a way to route my traffic to a US proxy that is fast enough to stream video, I just might think about canceling my NTL TV and just going with boxee on my apple TV.

I'm a big Plex user/supporter myself but I keep thinking I should try out Boxee as well - the fact that it can be installed on an AppleTV does seem pretty cool.

Two questions for you: if you install Boxee on an AppleTV, do you lose the ability to play back any DRMed content from the iTunes store? I have a US account and if I was to ever get an AppleTV, I'd like to keep the ability to play back movies/TV shows.

And the other one: I very much doubt it given the AppleTV hardware, but Plex does some pretty impressive buffering which perhaps Boxee can too - can it handle 720p mkv files?

No, not at all. Check out ATVUSB Creator. It installs an additional menu item called Launcher in which you can run XBMC or Boxee. I love Plex as well but the great thing is Boxee, Plex and XMBC are pretty much all the same thing, all built on XBMC. You just exit Boxee and it takes you right back to your main Apple TV menu. If something ever does go wrong you can always restore.

I can't atest for the quality of playback of 720p files because I am using my apple TV with a SD TV and hacked display drivers. I do notice boxee running a bit slower and from time to time will lag but I don't see that in video play back, only menu navigation. Since the AppleTV has the hardware to decode HD I would assume boxee and xbmc are made to take advantage of this but I'm not a big hardware guy myself so I don't know.

There are a few posts I have found online on how to set up HotSpot Shield on your apple TV to get Hulu and ABC to work but the problem is I haven't been too happy with the quality of service from Hotspot Shield. Granted its not made to route video over the VPN but its not something I would like to adopt in my living room. Maybe getting a friend in the states to set up a proxy server would work.
