For sure they are highly skilled working people but any manufacturing job is at risk in this "current climate".

Staff are expected to be offered a package of two-and-a-half weeks' statutory pay as well as an additional five-and-a-half weeks' pay per year of service.

Nice settlement. It will certainly help many of those who are laid off to survive this downturn and allow them to assess their options, particularly if they've been there for 6 years or more.

What course you doing Bryn? Or if you don't want to be specific, which area?

I know IT Tallaght is well known for the media course, I don't much else about it though.

The'll still be able to fulfill the contract by importing from one of their plants in a country where it's cheaper to produce them.

Not really, Ericsson installed a new network for them but due to apparent tension during the migration to the E/// kit E/// didnt get the contract for the outsourcing of network operations (BT won it)

Its been a while since I was involved with those companies so maybe it has changed but thats my understanding. Anyway any major problems will be referred to Athlone and if needed Dun Laoghaire.

    +1.

Getting motivated for final year is next to impossible at the moment. Only thing keeping me going is doing well enough to put myself in front of those around me.:(

Well now you have a reason to call her!

For final yearers, think of it like this - there are still jobs available in Ireland, but now they're hard to get, so get the best degree you can.

Another one of those greedy bastard companies on the slave-labour trail. They're all cutting their own throats and they don't realise it.

I'm pretty certain that one of the main reasons for the global meltdown is the fact that poor and cheaper countries are top-heavy with intensive work - and us "rich" feckers are making zilch. We don't even make the boxes that all of the crap goes into.

In ten years time, the former communist countries will have more than caught up with Ireland as far as costs are concerned, then everything will be made on the cheap in China. The rest of the world will be un-employed consumers, because there will be feck all jobs for anybody to do.

Good advice. I'm in the same boat as the other lads here- I'm ****ting bricks at the thoughts of leaving college this year. Though at least I was lucky to get my degree before fees come back.

I just saw this in the Independent now-shocking!

I wonder what incentives Ireland offered initially(i bet cheap labour, company tax) for these companies to bring their head quarters here. Poland, China and India offer value for money right now especially with the current economy
ESB kept increasing prices, goods and services are more expensive, wages, pay rises and bonuses kept increasing-wtf did we expect?

When did the ESB increase prices? I know the regulator increased prices.

thats the same thing. Lets not get pedantic. It doesnt matter who raised them if the company has to pay a higher rate.

Those contracts are stuff like service delivery and network rollouts/upgrades..the jobs that are going are in R&D which is a different part of the company to the service delivery and network deployment area.

I thought that too until my flatmate came home the other day talking about a graduate tax.

We are half being advised to go on and do a masters, weather the storm in further education as such. I'm horribly confused as to what to do.

I know someone who was part of the 300. He has just put down a mortgage and has two kids under 3 years old. Horrible situation to be in.

And how are china going to make money by manufacturing cheap goods if there's nobody in the west with jobs or enough money to buy them?

Better what? Ericsson's core business is not, nor ever has been mobile phones. Many of the phone calls you have made over the last few years will have gone through pieces of kit that I had a very small part in developing the software for when I worked for Ericsson. Nokia's share of network infrastructure is much smaller.
