Hi guys, needless to say, it depends on your own opinion but this is without doubt a bargain!!! I (like you all I'm sure!) am addicted to the likes of carzone, autotrader etc so I know that this care has been on sale for at least 2.5 years. It initially started out at EUR32k - even in a good car market, it was too much however price dropped over time. See the ad now...................EUR12k cash price!!!! Colour wouldn't be my choice however, for a 1999 reg, that is a pretty sweet price. Mileage relatively low too!!! If I could afford another, I would!!! Anyone tempted?!

    Indeed what a weird ad

Then, a '99 S-type (what engine?) and a '00 XJ8 for ten grand is just unreal

Edit: the S-type is the 3l V6 auto according to cartell

That 8-series is suspiciously lacking detail in the description, for such a classic car.

Like the rest of you I'm sure, I'm addicted to checking out car websites.

I started this post, showing a link to a BMW 840 with cash price of EUR12k. It sold shortly after. I see that it has re-appeared with an M badge in the front nose cone, and some new M mats for drivers feet. Lastly, another M badge added to the left hand side of the boot and the "ci" bagde removed, that comes after the "840" on the boot.

Now listed for EUR18, 950. There ya go!!!!

The website in your original post is no longer available. You didn't save it somewhere so we can all see that it is the same car?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 225 ✭✭shabbyalonso

Hi Unkel, geez, I didn't save it myself to be honest. Obviously without concrete proof, maybe I shouldn't say such things in my post above however having checked carzone, (8 series for sale pages), every day for about 4-5 years, I'm pretty confident that this is the same car. I remember the reg, the mileage and the interior (i.e. the buttons beside the auto gear stick, the nokia kit etc). Anyway, maybe I shouldn't say but I'm pretty sure!!!!
Also, the colour is quite unique for the 840 and not that many in Ireland :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

To be honest I thought it was underpriced at €12k, someone else seems to agree! I'd prefer the V12 though. ;)

How much would you allow for maintenance & repairs (using a specialist) at 10/12k mls p.a. ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

Although the mileage is low for its age, its also approaching the time when lots of parts start failing, like hoses, radiator, expansion tank and suspension components. You also wouldn't be far off a transmission fluid change (which is a debate whether it should be done in itself).

For an oil service from BMW, you're looking at around €300. With a car like this, i'd do the oil every 6000 miles. An Inspection ll will set you back at least €1000 every 2-3 years (I think thats the interval). Regular Inspection l is at least €600 annually. Tyres will be in the region of €800-€1200 (online).

To put it simply, I'd buy the car with €2000 in my back pocket because you don't know what will go wrong all at once.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 646 ✭✭✭Johnboy Mac

    ^ +1

I'd have min. €2k put to one side for emergencies and allow a minimum of €1.5k p.a. for routine servicing/repairs. I'd also be investing in new tyres every 10-12k.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

You could also cut your bills more than half by doing most of the servicing yourself. Or at least reduce them by not taking it to a dealer.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 646 ✭✭✭Johnboy Mac

You sure could but the majority of potential buys won't or can't. No, I would'nt be taking antwhere near a main dealer, I'd advise specialist.

    Indeed it is!

The 850Ci with the ordinary V12 is not a car I would strive to own, but the engine in the CSi is special. It is very similar to the engine custom built by BMW for the McLaren F1

Yeah, in for a penny in for a pound. If it's an 8 series you want that's the only one to buy imo and if I recall it was also available as a manual, if so that could make all the more interesting.

Just thinking over costs in running a 840. I've excluded initial 2nd purchase price, deprication and inflation but allowed for 10-12k mileage p.a.

    1. Servicing & general maintenance €1500
    2. Tyres x 4 €800
    3. Road tax €1500
    4. Insurance €750
    5. Fuel €2800

    TOTAL €7350 p.a.

Now lets presume I'm incorrect by 10%

    TOTAL €6600 p.a.

    X 3 years = €19800 plus some major repair or two @ €2000 = €21800

    So you do you think?

Ive been following them for a month now. Just bidding my time (ie till my car sells).
Actual owners report servicing grossly blown out of proportion on them too. The (late model) 840Ci seems quite sound other than EDC mishaps. But the same suspension woes plague all the cars Ive owned or looked at, relatively speaking its not an issue. No EDC in the CSI anyway though!

I think you shouldnt inc insurance as it varies wildly by person or tax (personally all my cars are at or near the 3l cutoff anyhow and all cars need tax). Fuel costs vary by month and driver and you didnt state the mpg target you used for that figure.

Looking at pure 8 series costs are the EUR1500 per year servicing, maybe, maybe not, Ive read several who had them as daily drivers, with only routine servicing once per 5 years. They were very much annoyed with the OTT servicing bugbear associated with the car.
Tyres, dunno but 12k per set seems fine? Ill have to check on 8er.ch

Well I was just getting views on overall running costs so insurance is part of that and I decreased everything by 10% so I'd say my costing including €1500 p.a. for maintenance/repairs (at a specialist) very reasonable. No matter what why you cut it €6600 p.a. can't be far out on average.

    Edit: As for fuel, 18mpg x 11,000mls = 611gals x 4.54lts = 2774lts x €1 or so = €2800

Hi guys, I'm actually the proud owner of an 840ci sport myself - bought it last year.
Firstly, in relation to running costs - as mentioned above, the 8 series does have the tag of being an expensive car to run and service. For my own first year, I have to admit that this is not the case ...... thankfully. Car tax is going to set you back in excess of EUR1500 per year so needless to say, that's an unavoidable cost. A tank of petrol at todays prices will cost the guts of EUR100 to fill up. MPG isn't great but depends on your driving route etc. I have had some minor works down to car (front suspension - bushes wear quite easily) but overall, including an oil change, I've maybe spent 800 - 1000 in a year. Done approx 4500 miles.
I love the car (here's a thread for anyone interested in my journey to 8 series ownership)! I've wanted one forever and finally have one. I love it.

The 1999 (green 840ci) on carzone for EUR12900 is a pretty good price. Prices deflated a bit since the credit crunch but they'll get back in the future and I think depreciation (I hope!) has gone as far as it might go. Some still overpriced mind.
