Sony 32W4000 displaying MHEG text on Irish DTT while a 26V4500 is not. Why?

Just bought a Sony 26” KDLV4500 for the bedroom. It’s receiving the RTE1, RTE2, TV3 and TG4 MPEG4 test transmissions from Clermont Carn perfectly. However its not showing MHEG Digital Text despite the MHEG indicator being active (RTE 1 and 2 only).

My 32” Sony KDLW4000 in the sitting room IS however displaying MHEG Digital Text. Both TV’s are tuned with the UK as the preset country.

Why is one tv showing the text and the other is not?

However I'm picking up MHEG functions ok on Freeview versions of BBC1, BBC 2 etc with this TV via either the text button or the red button. Could there be an incompatibility issue with current DTT tests and the 26V4500 model?

Anybody else with this TV experiencing the same issue?

I have a 32v4500 and don't have text. I didn't think there was any. Are you supposed to set it as UK? I didn't know that. I'll try it later and see if it works.

Interesting. Not been able to access the digital text as of yet. I too will try to setup my KDL40W4000 again

EDIT: Setting up the tv with the UK settings enables the digital text. How odd.

Also it lists the channels in the 800's

Yes Mossy, its a strange issue with this model of TV. Somebody actually pointed this out here last year sometime (forget who). I'd have never have thought to try it myself either otherwise.

As for the issue with the Irish DTT and my 26V4500, i'm guessing as its an engineering test still, not all makes and models of TV are fully compatible yet.

As its picking up MHEG functions from Freeview ok, the actual TV itself, i'm thinking, is not faulty. Still funny though that the MHEG indicator is on for RTE 1 and 2 and nothing is happening.

I cant find how you can chage the setting to UK on my 32v4500. Anyone know how?

Press Home button > Set-up > Auto Set-up > Do you want to start Auto set-up? > Ok > Language (select language) > Country (select country)

Press return then to exit.

I changed the setting to UK this morning but it hasn't worked. Shame.

Unfortunate. As I've said above is there an incompatibility issue with the Sony V4500 series and the engineering tests? Anybody else not getting MHEG Digital Text despite the MHEG indicator being visible with this TV?

When I watch the Irish digital channels via Technomate 6900 Combo the text is available

tadgh, is your country setting UK? Apologies for not mentioning earlier that if you put the country setting to Ireland, you should get the analogue version of teletext on the digital versions of RTE etc.

What version of text were you getting on your Technomate 6900 Combo? The MHEG version or analogue version?

Strange way of doing this though. Merely changing the country setting to Ireland did not allow access to analogue version of text. I deleted RTE1. Then did a digital manual scan on Channel 53 (Clermont Carn frequency for MPEG4 tests). Stored RTE1 again. Then text available on all 4 Irish stations via text button! Weird!

I tried the same method with the country setting on UK to see if I could get the MHEG version of text. No luck here. MHEG indicator remained active. Frustrating...............

tadgh, can you get Freeview reception from where you are in Co. Louth? If you can, are you getting MHEG services on your 26V4500?

At first, I couldn't receive the analogue version or the digital version text on the DTT channels. I have changed the settings to Ireland and UK, but with no luck. But when I changed the country settings to France, Itlay, or Netherlands, I get the analogue version text on the dTT channels. Very strange.

Rescanned RTE 1 and 2 just a short while ago. Now getting MHEG text on my Sony 26V4500. (see picture). Country setting is still UK. Also rescanned RTE Radio 1 and RTE 2 FM. You can also now get MHEG text on Radio 1 (MHEG indicator on).

Strangest of all though is when you select 2FM this automatically appears (see picture) without touching any buttons at all! (MHEG indicator on here as well). This is happening too on my Sony 32W4000.

Yeah but if they bring the epg info back, Mayo Exile looses the MHEG5 info again as the "Sonys" panic when too much stuff is thrown at it.

Someone recently mentioned in a thread that they had problems with RTE 1 and 2 in displaying the picture, but not on TV3 and Tg4. I have replicated it on a Sony Bravia KDL. The MHEG5 indicator is causing the issue, the Sony doesnt like it and behaves erratically from showing the channel for 2 seconds and then black screening to not displaying at all.

The solution is to add the channels to your favorites and flick channels from within favorites.....

Tv3 coming up as a pay channel! according to the Panasonic TH 37LZD81.

I suppose these are all classic symptoms of an engineering test and will be fixed eventually.

Sony W4000 series tellies are obviously made of sterner stuff than the V4500 series when it comes to panicking!

There was definitely a change in the last 2 days from Mt Leinster. My Sony EPG had been working fine for a few months before that.

Slegs: still no EPG information.

STB: My W4000 is fine, shows both EPG info (when it was there) and MHEG text. Its the V4500 that's having the wobblies. If the EPG comes back i'll re-scan to see if the MHEG text vanishes again and post a report.

I have seen the problems myself on a Sony Bravia KDL-46W400. And the only explanation is the MHEG5 flag that is on those channels. The solution above does enough to confuse the Sony as to allow those channels work in the event that you experience something similar.

EPG data is down at present from 3 Rock also.

Nope. Hasn't happened. Getting EPG info now and MHEG5 text still working with 26V4500. .
